Margaret Hortense Fauntleroy, only child of the late William
H. and Virginia Davis Fauntleroy, was born on January 21, 1929 in Baltimore, Maryland. She peacefully departed this life on April 2, 2024.
She began her formal education in Marietta, Ohio while residing with her grandparents (E. Ermin and Bessie Davis) and her uncle and aunt (John H. and Hortense Steele). Margaret, who preferred to go by her middle name Hortense, attended Washington Elementary School and graduated from Marietta High School in 1946. She then returned to Baltimore to enroll in Morgan State College (University) where
she received a Bachelor of Science Degree. While at Morgan, she was initiated into the Alpha Delta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in 1948. She pursued further degrees at Drexel University and Kent State University and had a Master s Degree in Library Science.
Hortense spent her entire career working in the state of Delaware public school system and retired from Jason High School. After retiring, she moved to Baltimore to be near her family. The family was able to enjoy gifts from her hobbies of knitting and ceramics. Hortense enjoyed traveling the world and sharing in these experiences with her family. She also enjoyed puzzles, cards, reading and volunteering at the Parkville Senior Center and The Baltimore Zoo. As a Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., she was actively involved in her sorority. Additionally, she attended Loch Raven United Methodist Church and supported her Morgan State Class of 1950 (Nifty Fifty).
Affectionately called Tootsie by her family, she leaves to cherish her memory: cousins Virginia Dean (Thomas), John Steele (Gabriel Martinez), Sharon Dow, Kia Dean, Kymberli Dean-Moody (Jacques), Christopher Dean, Kori Nance (Larry), Kaylin Moody, Kaliyah Moody, Kortney Cooper, Kamryn Moody, Dana Gaskins (Gregory), Avis Johnson, Christopher Johnson, Logan and Loren Nance, and a host of other family and friends.
