IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mark Anthony
Smith Sr.
May 10, 1956 – December 30, 2025
Mark Anthony Smith, Sr . passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, in Baltimore, Maryland surrounded by family.
Born on May 10,1956, to the late Nathaniel Smith and the late Michal Carney, Mark spent his early childhood years in the family home at 1140 N. Fulton Avenue, where he was raised until the age of 12. The family later relocated to East Baltimore's Douglas Homes, where Mark continued to grow and mature before eventually venturing out on his own to begin the next chapter of his life. Mark graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1974, earning his high school diploma with a Concentration in Carpentry. Shortly after high school, in 1976, he enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserve, serving with the 71st Air Cargo Squadron at Langley Air Force Base. He faithfully fulfilled his military duties until retirement in 1991.
One of Mark's greatest joys was his family, especially when his role expanded to fatherhood. Mark was the proud and devoted father to his three children: Maray, Angela, and Mark Jr.
A few years after he graduated high school, Mark began what would become a long and dedicated career with the Baltimore City Department of Public Works (Sanitation Department). He served the city he loved for 44 years, from 1976 until his retirement in 2021, demonstrating an unwavering work ethic and commitment to public service. A great marriage is not when the perfect couple comes together, it's when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences. As life presented hurdles, fences, and walls to climb, GOD saw fit for Mark and Angela to reconnect, this time, in holy matrimony on April 9, 2009. From that time until now, it has been a destination full of hope, respect, and understanding.
Mark was a proud Baltimore native whose love for his hometown ran deep—especially when it came to the Baltimore Ravens. Football season was sacred to him. Whenever the Ravens made it to the Super Bowl, Mark made sure the celebration was big, hosting or attending lively watch parties at his home, his sister Michaun's home, his brother-in-law Mechie's home or his brother-in-law Michael Kittrell's home. During the season, he cherished the tradition of picking up his younger brother Rodney so they could enjoy the games together, a ritual rooted in love, laughter, and brotherhood.
Beyond football, Mark found joy in flying drones with his brother Todd, his brothers-in-law, Mechie and Antonio often capturing and sharing videos from their adventures. He was also known for always bringing his camera to family gatherings and special events, preserving moments that will now be treasured memories for generations to come. Mark also shared a close bond with his cousin, Eric. The two could spend hours on the phone together, talking, laughing, and catching up without ever running out of conversation. Because of these frequent and extended phone calls, Mark's wife jokingly referred to Eric as his "other wife" (LOL).
After retirement, Mark enjoyed posting on Facebook and he characterized Monday "Do Nothing Monday". He would call his brother-in-law Kevin to remind him of "Do Nothing Monday".
Mark and Angie spent several Christmases at the Jones' homes for their annual Christmas celebrations. Occasionally, he would go on family trips and vacations. Mark traveled to Niagara Falls and RV camping in Connecticut; where he met a fellow RV Facebook friend. This past November, he was able to travel to New York to celebrate Thanksgiving and visit some of his favorite places from YouTube- Bryant Park, Times Square, Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street, and SoHo areas. Although he would go back and forth with family members about the correct answers, Mark loved playing trivia games at the family gatherings.
During Michaun's annual family cookouts, Mark could always be found at his trusted Grill Master post—a role he proudly held for many years before officially "Retiring" a few years ago. After retiring as the Grill Master, he passed the tongs on to his brother Rodney, nephew James, or whoever was available to take the reins. But Mark never strayed far, remaining close by to offer his opinion, watchful supervision, and the occasional expert tip, ensuring the tradition lived on just the way he liked it.
Mark was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Michal Carney, father Nathanial Smith; his brother, Rodney Scott, and his Mother-in-Law, Lula Jones.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Angela Smith; his children, Maray, Angela, and Mark Jr.; six grandchildren, William T., Shambre, Kaon, Amari, Akil, and Jailynn; six great-grandchildren, King, Grayson, Royal, Kaon Jr., Sire, and Kaari; his sisters, Cheryl and Michaun; his brother, Todd; two nieces, Chamere and Chanell; two nephews, James (Olivia) and Justin; two great-nieces; one great-nephew. Four Sisters-in-law Joyce, Cheryl (Kevin), Marlene (Zebulon), Martina; four brothers-in-law, Michael (Nellie), Daryl, Antonio, and Michael (Joan); and a host of other relatives and friends who were touched by his life.
Mark Anthony Smith, Sr. will be remembered for his love of family, his loyalty to his city, his service to his country, and the memories he captured and created. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him
