Obituary

Martha Martin, nee Martha Hackett, was born on January 5, 1910 in Baltimore, Maryland. She united in holy matrimony to her high school sweetheart, Joseph Martin on November 16, 1930. they were happily married for seventy-one years until his passing in 2002. Martha grew up in the John Wesley A.M.E. Church and in her adult life she chose to worship with the Jones Tabernacle Baptist Church; she was a faithful member for over forty years. during those many years, she sang in the church choir and sewed as a missionary. She visited the shut-ins, cared for the elderly in the Baptist Home and volunteered in the community in countless ways. She traveled every year to the Annual Baptist conventions, and throughout her life, visited far away places such as Jerusalem, Germany and Senegal, West Africa. Martha loved the Lord and always tried her best to embody compassion and kindness that Christ taught. She often cooked large pots of food and baked seven-up cakes which heartily nourished anyone who stopped by. She was a member of her neighborhood club, would regularly sweep the alley-ways to keep them them clean and sit on the porch to smile with and talk to visitors, neighbors and passer-bys. Her physical presence will be missed dearly, but we all choose to remember her loving and caring spirit. She leaves to mourn; her daughters, Vonita, Constance, Martha, Elvira, Yvonne and Joanne; along with twelve grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, fourteen great-great-grandchildren; many friends and relatives.
