Mary Bernice Anderson (Yurts); the eldest child of the late Morris and
Mary Spencer, was born on April 10th, 1934 in Baltimore, Maryland.
Affectionately known as Aunt Bernice, she attended Baltimore City Pub-
lic Schools until she graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.
She would go on to marry Dickie Anderson until his untimely death in
1948. After Dickie's death, Mary met and fell in love with James Herbert
Sf. On April 12th, 1950; she welcomed her one and only child, James (Pig)
Herbert Jr. who preceded her in death.
In her early years, Mary was a distinguished mixologist in various local
taverns throughout Baltimore City. Later she pursued a career as a Balti-
more City employee and would later obtain a position in the Baltimore
City Mayor's Office until she retired in 1987. Known for her tell it like it
is attitude; to know Aunt Bernice was to love her. She enjoyed cooking for
her family and left behind her infamous Beer Wing recipe.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; Morris and Mary Spencer,
sister; Ruth Jones, two brothers; David and Landon Spencer, and her son;
J ames Herbert Jr.
She leaves to mourn a loving and devoted grandson; Eric Herbert Sr., a
great-grandson; Eric Herbert Jr, and a host of family and friends.
