IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary E.
Gregory
June 23, 1938 – May 27, 2019
Mary Elizabeth White Gregory, was born in Washington, D.C. on
June 23, 1938. She was the oldest child born to Victor and Ruth
White. Mary peacefully crossed over to Glory on May 27, 2019
after a brief illness.
At an early age her parents moved to Baltimore, Maryland seeking
a better life for their family. Mary attended Baltimore City Public
Schools, graduating from the old Frederick Douglas High School.
As a teenager, Mary lived a happy life. She would regularly travel
to New York to visit her aunts and uncles. She wore all of the latest
fashions and trends that were popular doing that time. Wide skirts,
bobby socks, penny loafers (with the penny showing), and cuffed
dungarees. After graduation, she considered joining the Women's
Army Corps, but decided to take a job at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
She was later employed at Sinai Hospital, and retired from employ-
ment at Fort Meade Army Base. She was a dedicated, faithful, and
loyal employee, and these characteristics were demonstrated
throughout her employment. We recall an incident where despite
there being 15 inches of snow on the ground she still went to work
at Sinai. Her sons had to pick her up, carry her down the stairs, and
walk 3 blocks with her so she could report to work.
At a young age Mary gave her life to Christ. She became a member
of St. Paul Community Baptist Church under the leadership of
Reverend Gregory Perkins. Mary truly loved Reverend Perkins and
would light up whenever she was in his presence. Mary attended
service regularly until her illness presented her from doing so.
Mary had a kind, quiet, and loving spirit. You knew without a
doubt that she was a child of God. She trusted and depended on
Him for strength, guidance, and the will to live life to the fullest in
spite of her illness.
Mary loved being with family and friends at cookouts, and going
on mini vacations and outings especially plays at the Lyric Theater.
She also loved listening to music and dancing.
Mary was preceded in death by her son, Anthony White and
long-time companion George E. Thomas. She leaves to cherish her
memory: sons, Edward Gregory and Eugene Gregory (Lark Greg-
ory); sisters, Harriett Alexander and Patricia Martin; daughter-in-
law, Teresa White; five grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, a
host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins,
other relatives, and a very special and caring friend, Belinda Grant.
