Obituary

Mary A. Jordan, daughter of the late Willie and Juanita Jackson, was born on

November 5, 1931 in Lancaster, South Carolina. She departed this life on

Friday, March 8, 2019 after a lengthy illness.

Mary is the sixth of Willie's and Juanita's seven children, and she was the last

living sibling. Mary received her formal education from the Lancaster County

public schools. At a young age, Mary married Chalmers Jordan. From this

union, in 1950, Charles, their first son, was born. Shortly after, they moved to

Baltimore, Maryland during the Black Migration because the young couple

wanted to take advantage of the golden opportunities that the City of Balti-

more had to offer. Shortly after moving to Baltimore, they became owners of

a comer store on Division Street. Mary gave birth to daughter Janet in 1954,

and to three other sons: Terry, in 1955, Oscar, in 1956 (who preceded her in

death), and Barry, in 1957.

Later, Mary worked at Tickners Funeral Home, which was located on the

comer of Penn Street & North Avenue. In 1967, Mary obtained employment

with Westinghouse Electronics where she assembled parts for the military.

During her 31 years of service, she received several awards for her outstanding

job performance and perfect attendance. Mary's most cherished adventure was

M & J Catering, a joint venture that she and her sister-in-law, Mary Lewis

Jackson, established and managed.

Mary and her five children sat on the front porch in the evenings dressed in the

latest fashions. They attended football games, went fishing, enjoyed picnics,

and took long Sunday drives. One of their holiday traditions was to cut down

their Christmas tree at the tree farm. On the way home, they would stop for

breakfast with the tree tied to the top of car. Every Sunday, Mary and her

children attended Gospel Tabernacle Baptist Church, where she was a member

of the usher board for many years.

Later, Mary moved to the Hunting Ridge community where she joined the

Hunting Ridge Presbyterian Church and served on the usher board. She

enjoyed creating floral arrangements and making desserts for the church.

Mary received a Proclamation from the Mayor's office for fabulously decorat-

ing the Community Center. She also enjoyed golf, bingo, the arts, and football.

Mary was a world traveler. She visited Greece, Egypt, Jordan, Jerusalem,

Spain and Barcelona. If anybody needed a companion to Atlantic City or Las

Vegas, they could count on Mary.

To cherish her memory, Mary leaves three sons (Charles, Terry, and Barry)

and one daughter (Janet) and one daughter-in-law Daisy. Grandchildren:

Clinton, Donnell, Sherice, Terharsa, Juanita Gross, Timeka, Barrington, and

Charnice. Ten great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, a host of

nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Her grandson Eric Jordan pre-

ceded her in death.

Mary Alice - mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother- you will truly be missed.
