Mary Louise Marcus
affectionately known as Mother Dear
by many was born in, Greenville, North Carolina onApril 15, 1935
to the late German and Kizzie Hicks. She was one of eighteen
children, all of whom preceded her in death. She entered eternal
peace at home surrounded by love ones on March 30, 2018,
after a lengthy illness.
Mary, came to Baltimore at an early age, where she attended
Public Schools. After graduating from High School, she took
classes at CCB and beginning working for Urban Service as a
Community Active Coordinator. During this time, she was
involved in many community development projects. She is
credited for Baltimore's first cultural festival geared towards
Black people and local black talent. It was called the Soul Festival
and was held in downtown Baltimore. During her service at with
Urban Service she received many awards and citations. She loved
bettering the community she lived in. Mary would rally the children
in the neighbor for clean block projects, winning awards every year
the block participated.
After leaving Urban Service employment, Mary received a degree in
nursing and began working as a nurse at University Hospital from
which she retired. She like to keep busy, after retiring, she devoted
much of her time and energy as a caregiver to family members and
working with the elderly giving in home care.
Coming from a Christian family she met the Lord at an early age.
She loved the Lord and had no problems praising his name. She
became a member of St. James United Methodist Church in the
early 80's, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. B. Jordan. She was
an active member, Mary was an United Methodist Women,
a Busy Bee, sang on the Senior Choir, and was a Lay
Servant. No task was every too small or to large, she just like
lending a hand, anything to up lift God's name and bring
someone else closer to him. During her time at St. James,
Mary met and married Rev. Dr. Lloyd Marcus. They as a couple
continue their spiritual journey together. She was a fabulous,
elegant First Lady.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband,
Rev. Dr. Lloyd Marcus; daughter, Marchella Henry;
two sons, Kyle Hicks, and James Scrivener; four step sons,
Lloyd Jr., Jerry, David, and Alan Marcus; one step daughter,
Gloria Marcus; seven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren,
seven great, great grand-children, two beloved nieces who would
fight fires for her, Shirl Hicks, and Laverna Parker, three nephews,
and one sister in law.
