Mary Lorraine Powell, formerly Mary Lorraine Peterson, daughter of the late Augustus and Geneva Peterson was born on August 28, 1934 in Blackstone, Virginia. She departed this life on May 18, 2012 after suffering a massive stroke. She lived a full and fruitful life. She moved to Harlem, New York as a child where she completed high school at St. Mary's School for girls. She worked for a short time as a seamstress with various designers, most notably Ralph Lauren in the garment district of New York, New York. She loved to design clothes and create fashions, she could see a design and recreate it without a pattern because she was a gifted seamstress. She continued to sew up until her death. She met Corbett Powell formerly of Lumberton, North Carolina in 1953 and after s short courtship they married in 1955 and moved to Baltimore, Maryland. In Baltimore she became a homemaker and mother. She bore him three children; Corbett, Donna and Johnny in that order. Her husband Corbett Powell was called home on November 29, 1996. Mary was a devoted wife and mother. She will be sincerely missed by everyone who knew her. She leaves to mourn; her children, Corbett Andrew Powell, Donna Marie Wilkes and Johnny Eugene Powell; one aunt Bessie Powell 95; her niece Cheryl Powell; four grandchildren, Corbett A. Powell, Ashley Powell,, Johnny Powell and Jeney E. Powell; family friends, Michele Ellerbee, Brandy Norwood, Amelia Brooks, Linwood Scott and Roger Martin; numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
