Matthew Lee Harris, son of the late Claude Sr. and Luna Harris,
was born on July 20,1935 in Durham North Carolina. He peacefully departed this life on Thursday April 5, 2018 after a hard fought battle with congestive heart failure.
Matthew, affectionately known as Pop Pop", received his early education in North Carolina and moved to Baltimore, MD in search of the "good jobs". What he found was the love of his life, Patricia and two sons: Anthony and Darren Eckels.Later on, they had three more children together: Tracy, Tira and Donnell (who preceded him in death in 1996).
Matthew and Patricia married in 1985 and divorced in 2007, but remained great friends. Matthew made a living working multiple jobs and trades, in addition to driving cabs, but his most rewarding jobs were being a father and grandfather.
Matthew was mostly a home-body, but he always enjoyed taking his family on trips out of town and helping others, no matter what they needed. He was a very humble, selfless man and was well-respected in his neighborhood because he was a rare and awesome father figure to so many.
Matthew was a fun-loving man that absolutely adored his children and grandchildren. His hobbies included playing spades, spending time with family and being the unofficial neighborhood watch. Throughout his illness, Matthew never complained and always kept a positive, loving attitude. Six siblings: Annie Louise, Brody, Estelle, Mabel, Andrew and Lilly preceded him in death.
Matthew leaves to cherish his memory: Four children: Anthony (Elizabeth), Darren, Tracy (Andre), Tira (Donta); eleven grandchildren: Jennifer, Tymel, Danae, Christian, Tamira, Darren, Augustine, Darria, Giovanni, Joy and Dasia; three great grand children: London, Melonny and Tymel, Jr; two brothers; Stanley and Claude, Jr. and a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Matthew will be tremendously missed by all who knew and loved him.
