Mattie Elizabeth Burnette, daughter of the late Edna Cosby was born on October 10, 1929 in Newport News, Virginia. She departed this life and entered Eternal rest on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at Future Care Lochearn in Baltimore, Maryland.
Mattie was educated in the Newport News Public School System and graduated from High School before moving to Baltimore, Maryland. Mattie was we;; known for her "Jazzy" Dressing and long fingernails. She always looked fabulous and everyone loved her with that "sharp" tongue if you got her wrong. Mattie also liked doing hair and makeup, Some say she missed her calling, but that was not what she wanted to do. She just wanted everyone to look their best. When she wasn't working , you could find "Diddy's Hair Salon" on Rogers Avenue.
Mattie bar-tendered for a long time at "Roots" before ending her working career with the department of Social Service as a Receptionist.
Mattie also loved her son Eddie, Jazz Music, Remy, Grandchildren, great-grands, great-great grands and traveling.
Mattie was preceded in death by her one and only child - son (James Eddie Whitley - 2018), granddaughter (Stella T. Whitley aka "Missy" 2011) and special cousin Luther C. Brown (Skippy) 2017. Matties memory of genuine love and devotion will be cherished by her daughter-in-law Lavern V. Whitley; 5 grandchildren: Vernette S. Marshall (Shawn), Trina T. Rodriguez, Stacey V. Smith. Stephanie M. Whitley, and Lauren E. Whitley; 3 Grandsons in law: Troy Marshall, Felix Rodriguez and Kenneth Smith Sr.; 11 Great - Grandchildren: John Carter, Shamira Marshall, Jamira Marshall, Karl L WalkerJr., Jameesa Yarborough, Jacqueena Yarborough, Jewel Bremer (Trae Bremer), Kenneth T.J. Smith Jr., Stacey A. Smith, Christian A. Smith and Joshua I. Smith; 6 Great-great grandchildren: Kaneira, Daequan, Taeshaun, Kynley, Zamora and Kyser; and a host of cousins and friends.
