Mattie McClendon, was born on September 28, 1939 in Wilson, North Carolina to the late Devonia and Minnie Powell. She went home to be with the Lord on July 5, 2017.

Mattie moved from Wilson, North Carolina to Baltimore, Maryland at the age of 2 years old. She attended Baltimore City Public Schools.

In 1958, she married Samuel McClendon and she birthed 4 children.

Mattie was a member of New Unity Baptist Church, where she attended for over 40 years. She loved to sing her gospel songs in church. Her favorite song was "Somebody Prayed For Me".

Mattie was a homemaker. She took care of her home, her children, and later in life helped raise her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also volunteered in the school system for many years, where the students all knew her as "Grandma Mattie".

Mattie was preceded in death by her brothers, Devonia and William Powell; sister, Vivian Greham; children, Samuel Jr., Allan and Andrew McClendon.

Mattie leaves to cherish in her memories: her husband, Samuel McClendon; daughter, Regina Perry (Alphonso Perry Sr.); brothers, Norman and Robert Powell; grandchildren, Michael Harris, Alicia, Alphonso Jr., and Shawn Perry, Wyvonne Williams, Sheena McClendon, Ashli McClure, Charity, Stephen, and Ezra Taylor; daughter-in-law, Diana McClendon; 2 sisters-in-law, Felicia Powell and Lola Davis; great grandchildren, John, Regina, Marvin, Yazmine, Michael, Aaron, Ahmad, and Jermiah Jr., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
