Maurice Washington Hurd, Sr. was born April 22, 1922 in Frederick, Md.
to the late Stanley Hurd and Leona Washington. He attended public school
in Warrenton, Va. After leaving school he worked at the Edgewood Arsenal
in the Chemical Gas Division. At the young age of20 he went in the
military in the Army and was stationed in Japan during World War II. He
then went into the Air National Guard and served during the Korean
Conflict. He retired as a Master Sergeant. Maurice was a hard worker.
While working with the Air National Guard he also worked at the Pentagon
in DC as well as the Perpetual Bank in DC. On the weekends he worked at
the Fulton Bar. Maurice wanted to make sure that his growing family
wanted for nothing.

Maurice was a Lifetime member of the American Legion, VFW as well as a
lifetime member of the Military Order of the Cootie, which was known as
"The Honor Degree of the VFW". Membership to the Cootie is
recognition of outstanding service to the VFW and its programs.

Maurice joined Davis Memorial under the leadership of Rev. Patrick
Hipkins in 1991. He was a faithful member and truly loved his church. He
was a member ofthe Trustee Board until his health failed him. He truly
loved the Lord and would get filled up every time he was in the House of
the Lord.

Family was everything to Maurice since he was an only child. He made up
for his lack offamily in his early years by going on to father five children
and raising another four children. He was a great husband, father,
grandfather and friend. He enjoyed playing cards and in the early years,
always had a cigar rolling around in his mouth.

He truly loved his wife Marcella and missed her so much that we believe he
had a little talk with Jesus and was able to join her four years and three days
after her earthly departure. His son Maurice, Jr. also preceded him in death.

He leaves to honor his memory two sons, Michael and James (Paulette),
