Obituary

MAZIE VERL JONES BANKS, daughter of the late Mathew 1. "Matt" Jones and Lou Nettie Davis Jones was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina on November 6, 1923. She departed this life at Atlantic Shores Health and Rehabilitation Center in Millsboro, Delaware on September 25, 2015.

She was educated in the public school system in Nash County, North Carolina. After moving to Baltimore, at the age of seventeen, to stay with family members she held various jobs, including stints as a domestic worker and later as a retail associate.

In 1952 she became the proud mother of her eldest son, Rayner Chance.

In 1955, Mazie Verl married Thomas Christopher Banks. She bore her beloved Buck four children: Donna, Garris, Thomas, and Keith. Buck and Mazie also provided for and helped to raise five grandchildren; Willetta, Christopher, Akeita, Karlton and Malcolm. Mazie would frequently baby sit two of her great-grandchildren: Christina and Kohen. Her two nieces, Sandra Donald and Jendayi Oakley-Gordon, were dear to her.

In 2011 Mazie and her sister, Margie, moved to Bel Air, Maryland to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Gary and Garris Harris. They relocated to Millsboro, Delaware in 2013.

Mother Banks was a God-fearing and faithful woman. She always showed compassion to those in need, giving what she could, even if it was just a word of encouragement. She was a devoted wife and mother, and she had a special love for her grandchildren. Some of the things she enjoyed were reading cooking, sewing and listening to music. And as we all know, Mazie appreciated a good joke.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Thomas C. Banks, her brother George W. Jones, and her sister Margie J. Donald. Mrs. Mazie Verl Banks fought the good fight and she stayed the course. She leaves to cherish her memory: three sons, Rayner 1. Chance, Thomas M. Banks, and Keith 1. Banks; two daughters, Donna M. Banks Nichols and Garris D. Banks Harris; son-in-law, Gary Alan Harris; daughters-in- law, Katana 1. Hall Banks and Penny Butler Chance; mne grandchildren; six great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. Viewing Joseph H.
