Obituary

Melvin Lee Jones, son of the late Robert and Lucille Jones, was born May 28, 1939 in Baltimore, Maryland. He departed this life on February 12, 2007, after a courageous battle with leukemia. Melvin, affectionately known as Petey, attended Southern High School and received his formal educ ation at the Community College of Baltimore. He received an Honorable Discharde from the U.S. Army after serving four years, which included a tour of duty in Hawaii and service as a medic. After serving the U.S. Military, Melvin worked for Bethlehem Steel and later pursued a fulfilling career with General Motors as Senior Assembly Lineman. After 39 years of exceptional service with General Motors, he retired and devoted his time to doing the things he really enjoyed. Melvin L. Jones married the former Beverly Hyacinth Morgan on June 17, 1967. Out of this union two daughters were born. Melvin was a very spiritual man and had a true personal relationship with God. He also has a deep and undeniahle love for his family and friends. He was happiest when his family was nearby; joking, eating, laughing, and sometimes arguing. It didn't matter to him, just as long as they were around. Family and friends took a genuine liking to his gregarious character. He was always up for a friendly debate and enjoyed a good challenger. His bright smile, funny jokes, and contagious laugh penetrated everyone he came into contact with. Melvin was also a local patriot; he loved Maryland hblue crabs and the Maryland Lottery. Melvin had a n insatiable love for music, specifically that of jazz. He developed and interest in the arts, photography, painting, and sculptures- while attending college. In addition to the arts, he developed exceptional skills and craftsmanship in home improvement. Whether he was building a deck, furniture or framing a basement, it was done with precision and accuraacy. His legacy and fond memories continue through his devoted wife, Beverly; his loving daughters, Sonia Von Robinson and Erica Renee Snyder; son, Michael Anthony Jones; sons-in-law, Willie S. Robinson, Jr. and Howadrd Kirk Snyder; grandchildren, Willie S. Robinson, III, Miles A. Snyder, Andrew Jones; sister, Mary Rowlette, Essie Jones and Christine Jennings; brother-in-law, Leonard Morgan, Sam Jennings, and Harold Rowlette; sisters-in-law Judith Hurd, Francis Morgan, and Isabel Jines; nephews, Phillip Jones, Timothy Rowlette, Blanchard Hurdgodson as well, and Leonard Morgan, Jr.; nieces, Kelly Massey, Lynn Jones, Wendy Rowlette, Cathy Johnson, Sandy Parsons, Tracy Rowlette, and Melanie Jones; goddaughter, Kimberly Wingfield; and a host of other family members and dear friends.
