MELVIN SYLVESTER WALKER, son of the late Robert Walker and Doris Roundtree, was born at City Hospital in Baltimore, MD on June 15, 1951. Melvin received his formal education at the school formerly known as Baltimore Academy (now known as Baltimore Jr. Academy), and completed high school at North Western, where he graduated with honors and became a Cadet (a policeman in training). Growing up, Melvin enjoyed bodybuilding, boxing, singing in school plays (with his childhood best friend, Johnny Johnson), and playing baseball. Melvin worked at the Rosewood Youth Facility as a Youth Counselor for over 17 years until his retirement. Melvin had a way with the young people. As a faithful member of the former Cherry Hill (now New Beginnings Seventh-Day Adventist Church), Melvin rededicated his life to Christ and was baptized by Pastor George Williams in 1997. Melvin became quite ill in late October of this year. While under treatment at Johns Hopkins Medical Center, his doctors, nurses, and therapists often tearfully commented to Melvin and his family that they were amazed at his testimony and grace with which he endured his painful illness. Melvin was often heard stating, "I have made my calling and election sure. I know I can't beat this cancer, but this is God's will and I accept it." Melvin's favorite saying was, "Real men love the Lord!" Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Walker and Doris Roundtree, and his sister, Margaret Trayham. He leaves to mourn his passing: his five children, Melvin J r., Melanie, Tina, Lamel, and Sharon; two sisters, Joyce Hargrove and Grace Walker; one biological brother, Robert (Sandra) Walker; one brother for life, Johnny (Jeannette) Johnson; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, and one very special friend, Diane Thompson.
