Obituary

Mildred Kathleen Moore, a retired manager of the famed Crawford Grill, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, peacefully departed this life, Dec 21, at the age of 94. She was born in Heidelberg, Pennsylvania, January 2, 1926. She was a daughter of Ernest Reed, construction worker, of Lynchburg, Virginia, and Nina Christabel Oliver Reed, a domestic and homemaker, of St. Vincent, Virgin Island. One of seven children, she was affectionally called "Red" because of her naturally sandy red hair, by many, but her family fondly called her "Sis".

At 18, she moved to New York where she met and married Fetaque Sanders, magician, and USO manager. This marriage ended in a divorce. From that marriage, was born their daughter, Carolyn.

She later married Harry "Abbie" Moore, employed with the city of Pittsburgh. They lived in Pittsburgh's Hill District, where they raised two children, Abbie and Nena. Their son, Abbie, died December 24, 1997.

Mildred was a people person and moved with ease at the premier Crawford Grill jazz club for nearly 40 years, owned by Buzzy Robinson. She regularly engaged, to name a few, legendary musicians like Art Blakey, Stanley Turrentine, Shirley Scott, Walt Harper, Charles Mingus, George Benson, Mickey Bass her godson, most of whom began their careers at the Crawford Grill. The late August Wilson, renowned playwright and close family friend was a regular patron at the Grill. On April 7, 2001, the Crawford Grill received a Marker from the Pennsylvania and Historical and Museum Commission. The building as of2012 became eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

While managing the Crawford Grill, in 1995, WPXI -Channel 11 News Anchor interviewed Mildred, about the catered food she and her employees prepared each Wednesday during the weekday practices for the Pittsburgh Steelers. "She brought lunch in a big way", said the anchor, to which the players replied, "pork chops and sweet potato pies were their favorites".

In addition to her daughters, Carolyn Syphax-Young, and Nena Moore Welborn, Corey Moore, son, she leaves to celebrate her life a sister, Margarite Vallery and two brothers, Hartman Reed and Frederick Reed, two grandchildren and four great grandchildren, numerous family members, neighbors and friends. Her daughter, Nena, said "the long life she lived is attributed to her enduring and eternal love of her family, neighbors and friends." Her husband, Abbie, preceded her in death on June 6, 2009.

After the passing of her husband, Mildred moved to Baltimore, Maryland to be near her daughters. She resided at Parkview Senior Housing, Coldspring, Newtown. She was an active resident in the senior community where she and neighbors delighted in sharing stories of their beginnings, families, good food and of course, football. Red remained an avid and enthusiastic Steeler fan - to the end.

The celebration of Mildred's life will be scheduled at a later date.
