Obituary

Nettie I. Brooks.departed this life February 6, 2013. She was Born on June 3, 1912 to the late James Gresham and Lottie Smith Gresham Daughter of a Slave in Essex County Virginia. She was the youngest of five children, Sadie, Mayhew, George, and Theresa all preceded in death Nettie Was educated in the public Schools of Essex County. At a young age, she was Baptized and joined Oak Grove Baptist Church. Nettie met and married the late Edward L. Brooks of the same County. Out of this union, four children were born: Edward Junior deceased Herman Lee deceased Edwin Bernard, and Alvin Gresham were born. Early in their marriage, Nettie and Edward moved to Baltimore, Maryland and made it their permanent home. Nettie joined Enon Baptist church in 1953. She was a member of the member of the Willing workers Club and taught Sunday School classes at Enon for many years. Her favorite scripture was the 23rd Psalm. Nettie went back to school attending Carver vocational Trade School here in Baltimore and graduated with a certificate qualifying her as a Seamstress. She was hired by the French Shop on Charles Street here in Baltimore and worked there until she retired. She also made clothes for many people Professionally in her home. Nettie loved to cook and spend time with her family. Every one that knew her, family and friends alike loved her famous pound cakes. We, as a family will surely miss her cooking skills. She loved going to church, talking on the phone, watching TV, and could play a mean game of Chines Checkers, a game that she really loved. She leaves to cherish her memory: two sons: Edwin B Brooks and Alvin G. Brooks: two daughter in laws; Loretta M. Brooks and Sandy Brooks; one sister in law Ruth Brooks; four grandsons; Michael A. Brooks-Nona, Raymond K. Brooks-Cynthia, Keith Gray Brooks and Gary L. Parker-Debbie two granddaughters; Kristin A. Vaughn-Klaheed and Erica Payne all of Atlanta, GA; six nieces; Jean Dorsett New York, Patsy Dorsett New York, Barbara Carter New Jersey, Delores Brooks Richmond, VA, Cora Gresham Newport News, VA and Eula Banks. One Nephew Jonnie Dorsett; and a host of Great Grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A dear friend who looked out for our Mother over the years.
