OLIVER ROLAND KELLY (Ollie) was born in Baltimore, Maryland to parents William and Florinda Kelly on June 18, 1929. As a young man Ollie was a strong athlete. He was a football player, a baseball player, a wrestler, and he acquired a black belt in karate. Oliver joined the United States Marine Corps in 1952. His rank was Private First Class and he was a member of the Honor Guard. He actively served in Korea for 2 years; held the position of military policeman; and was honorably discharged in 1960. Oliver married Shirley May Jennings in Baltimore in 1952. They moved to New York and resided there until their return to Baltimore in 2000. They were married for 50 years until her passing in 2003. Oliver deeply loved his wife and always referred to her as his "First Lady". He worked for General Foods from 1956 to 1986. During his time there he became the company's first black union leader, and subsequently their first black foreman. He also worked as a house painter and furniture refinisher. He was a member of the Greater Refuge Temple Church in New York for 20 years where he served as an usher and as a security officer. Oliver had great faith in the Lord. He was quite a gentleman and had such a kind way about him. He was extremely organized and he always took care of business. He helped many people during his time on earth. Oliver is loved by many.
