Obituary

Ollie M. Phillips was born May 30,1910, in Fort Springs, Kentucky. She was the only daughter of five children born to John H. and Mary E. Davis. Ollie graduated from the old Dunbar High School, earning an academic scholarship to Fisk University and then completing her undergraduate degree at West Virginia State University. She last completed her postgraduate studies at Capital University in Columbus, OH. Ollie professed her faith in the Lord at an early age and was a baptized member of New Vine Baptist Church, Fort Springs, KY, where she began her many years of service in song to the Lord. In the field of recreation, Ollie was appointed Assistant Director of City Recreation in Lexington, KY. She later accepted a position leading girls and women's activities in music and dramatics in Dayton, OH. It was during this time period that she met and married James, W. Miller, a building contractor. To this union were born three children: Mary Janice, Joan and James, Jr. In 1954 the family moved to Columbus, OH. Remaining active socially and civically for many years, Ollie and James, Sr., became charter members of The Good Shepherd Baptist Church, where James Sr. served until his death in 1978. Ollie served in the Sanctuary Choir and as a member of the Hospitality and By-laws Committees. Ollie taught English, Psychology and Sociology in the Columbus Public School System and in the Catholic Diocese for 25 years. In 1985 Ollie wed Robert E. Phillips in Washington, DC, at New Bethel Baptist Church, pastored by family friend Rev. Walter Fauntroy. Mr. Phillips, a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, passed away in 2003. Ollie's son, "Jimmy" passed away in 2006, after a long illness. Ollie's daughter, Mary Janice, passed away in 2012. In 2008 Ollie was recognized by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., as a Diamond Soror (75 year member). She was a Charter Member of the Columbus Chapter of the Northeasterners, Inc., and became an active member of the Baltimore Chapter. Ollie enjoyed life in a variety of forms: she loved music, fishing, gardening, exercising and socializing. A devoted and dedicated member of Providence Baptist Church since her relocation to Baltimore in 2007, Ollie truly cherished singing in the Combined Choir. Ollie leaves a legacy of tremendous faith, love, wisdom and style along with wonderful memories to be cherished by her daughter Joan Pullian, granddaughter Michele Booth Cole, great granddaughters Grace, Madison and Justine Cole, their father Jerome Cole and many devoted and attentive nieces and nephews, with many friends across multiple generation who claimed her as "Aunt Ollie."
