IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Oscar
Lawrence
August 21, 1930 – October 5, 2018
OSCAR WALLA
C
E LAWRENCE, J
R
.,
the son of the late, Oscar and
Ida Sheriff Lawrence, was born August 21, 1930 in Manning, South
Carolina. After a lengthy illness and as he slept, he answered God's call
to eternal rest at 12:45 p.m. on October 5, 2018.
Oscar accepted Christ at an early age and after moving with his family to
Baltimore in 1945, he joined the Mount Moriah Baptist Church. Oscar,
who was affectionately known as "e. W.," was educated in the Baltimore
City Public School System. After high school, he enlisted in the United
States Air Force and served in the Korean War.
Oscar married Essie Mae Hart and their union was blessed with a
daughter, Barbara. He later united with Ruth Watkins and was blessed
with two more daughters, Roslyn and Doreen. Oscar was employed by
the U. S. Postal Service for several y~ars and held various other jobs to
support his family. He was a loving and caring family man who adored
his older sister, Daisy and his baby sister, Shirley, who preceded him in
death. He was known to dote on his three daughters and his nieces and
nephews. He enjoyed being present at all family gatherings.
In Oscar's later years, he became a resident of Emmanuel Assistant Living
under the loving care of Leatha Evans who called him "Uncle Lawrence."
He spent four years there enjoying home cooked meals, going to the
movies, and attending church services. Although there were three other
veterans who were also residents, and who were all called "Uncle," Oscar
decided it was he who would sit in the front seat with Leatha no matter
where they traveled.
When his health started to decline, Oscar moved into the Veterans
Administration's Residential Facility at Loch Raven. He often told his
caretakers there to call him "Mr. C. W." and that's what many of them
called him. While there, he enjoyed clapping his hands and patting his
feet to music, having his daughters visit, playing cards and checkers,
attending special monthly events and most especially playing Bingo. He
loved the Thursday Bingo so much that if he was visited after 4:00 p.m.
he would still have his winnings squeezed tightly in his hands.
