Obituary

After a long illness, fighting against the ravages of Alzheimer's disease, Otelia Brooks Wiley quietly and peacfully passed away in her sleep on March 14, 2008. Otelia was born in Glen Burnie, Maryland on May 2, 1917 to the late Maxie A. Brooks and Frances Jackson Brooks. She attended Sunday school at John Wesley United Methodist Church and joined the Church at a very early age. She attended Furnace Branch Elementary School and obtained her high school equivalency later in life from Douglass High School. The oldest of eight children, Otelia helped her mother raise some of her younger siblings, especially Elbert. In doing this, she developed a love for children that lasted throughout her life. In 1938, she was united in holy matrimony to the late Joseph E. Hall. From this union, Shirley and Joseph, Jr. were born. In 1968 she married the late Florizel Wiley. She was employed by the State of Maryland-Harbor Tunnel for over twenty-plus years in a clerical capacity. Otelia was a warm, friendly person who was always close to her family. She loved music, especially singing and playing the piano. As a young child, her father carried her to Baltimore every Saturday where she received piano lessons from Mrs. Lovey Husketh. She talked about Mrs. Husketh all her life. She and Yvonne Gaither took singing lessons from Ray Parker for a number of years. She owned a piano and would insist that her children and grandchildren listen to her play. For years, Otelia wanted to get her driver's license, and she did get it; however, she never drove. On the day that she received her license, she attemped to park the car in the garage-BIG MISTAKE. She ran into the side of the garage. She never again got behind the wheel of a car. She did, however, continue to renew her driver's license. She had wonderful eyesight until the end of her life, so renewing her license was not a problem. She leaves to rejoice in her memory: her daughter, Shirley Hicks; son, Joseph Hall; three grandchildren, Robin Hicks, Eric Hicks, and Joy Hall; four great-grandchildren, Tashia Hicks, Harry Hicks, Jr, Keria Hicks and Kevin Hicks Jr; four great-great-grandchildren; sister, Anne Vintes; brother, Elbert Brooks; daughter-in-law, Bala Hall; four sisters-in-law, Vivian Hall, Barbara Brooks, Mary Brooks and Carrie Brooks; brother-in-law, Garnet Vintes; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
