Perry David Hawks, son of the late Fannie Perry and
Waverly D. Hawkes, Sr., was born on August 24, 1926
in Earls Amelia County, Virginia. He was the
youngest of three children. On September 20, 2018, he quietly
slipped away into the arms of Jesus. At an early age, Perry gave
his life to the Lord.
Perry, lovingly nicknamed 'Jelly' by his mother, received his early
and formative education through the Virginia Public School
System.
In 1946, Jelly enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he
served his country for 22 years as an Air Force Senior Auto
Mechanic. While in the military, Jelly married Lola Trezvant
and from this union they had 3 children; 2 sons, Yul De and
Norman (Tigo) Claude, and a daughter, Deverior Luevnia whom
he affectionately called 'Sugnin'. Jelly loved his princess "Sugnin".
Jelly received the wwn Victory Medal and the National Defense
Service Medal. Jelly would bend your ear for hours talking about
his various stints in the Air Force. He would mention other airman
so often that you felt like you knew them. Being a Tuskegee
Airman brought much joy and pride to Jelly. After retiring from
the military with an honorable discharge, Jelly made Baltimore his
home where he became self-employed as an automotive mechanic.
Everyone in the family and neighborhood would take their cars to
Jelly and his two sons, Yul and Tigo for repairs. Also, if your car
broke down anywhere and you called Jelly, no questions
asked, he would find you and if possible, fix your car on the spot.
Jelly delighted in teaching his sons and other young men his
trade as well as learning from his sons.
In a second marriage to Inez Dixon in 1982, Jelly and Inez (Butchie)
lovingly raised their adopted son, Derrick and Butchie's daughters,
Mary and Renae. Jelly was a devoted and loving father to all his
children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He would extend
himself to them for whatever the situation. He had a special
relationship with his great- grandchildren; they lovingly called
him 'great Pop'. Jelly had a special relationship with his sister Alice.
As the youngest of three, you know he was spoiled, he was a mama's
boy. Jelly loved his extended family; he shared fond memories of
his nephews, cousins, and friends. In his pastime, Jelly enjoyed
traveling annually to the family reunions and traveling to Inez's
various choir engagements. He relished his time with
Butchie sitting on the back porch talking about the 'Woods Family'
and how they thought they knew everything. Woodstock Seven
knew thatJelly loved us as much as we loved him, and he was
so honored to bea part of our circle. At various times, Jelly and
Butchie could hear the casinos
calling their names. So, off they would go to make their millions;
most of the time coming home broke.
Perry is preceded in death by his three sons, Yul De, Norman
Claude, Derrick, his stepson, Larry Trezavant; a brother,
Waverly D. Hawkes, Jr., and a special niece, Phyliss A. Birckhead, MD.
