Obituary

Phyllis Inez Smithwick Boyd, the seventh of eleven children of the late John Henry and Rosanna Wills Smithwick was born on June 11, 1941 in Plymouth, North Carolina. On Saturday, October 11th, the Lord quietly whispered her name, she willingly answered, and accepted her heavenly wings where she transitioned peacefully to her home in glory. At a young age; Phyllis was baptized at New Chapel Baptist Church in Plymouth, North Carolina. She attended N C. Public Schools, graduating from Washington County Union School. Upon moving to Baltimore in the early 1960s, she continued her education at Baltimore City Community College and later joined Macedonia Baptist Church of Baltimore City in the mid-1990s. On November 24, 1962, Phyllis married the love of her life, Clarence Boyd Although there were no children born of this union, she developed a close, maternal bond with her devoted nephew, Terricios Carr. She experienced a variety of vocations until her 30 year tenure at The First National Bank of Maryland, beginning in 1968. Although Phyllis loved her career, she decided to retire in 1997, due to health issues. Because Phyllis was so family oriented, she truly loved any opportunity to gather with her family. She had a passion for cooking, earning her the nickname "Paula Dean". One of her favorite pastimes was daily, hours-long phone conversations with her sister andfriends, where she could run the battery down on any cordless phone. Shopping, casinos, travel and TV shows such as "The Voice" and "Dancing with the Stars" were among Phyllis' favorite forms of entertainment. She was a woman of great taste and style, which was reflected in her talent for interior decorating and beautifully wrapped holiday gifts. Phyllis always looked forward to her in-home Communion visits from Deacon and Deaconess Bud. Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents, five siblings, Wyoming (Theodore), Rosanna (John), Jean (Emory-d), Hildria (Doris) and Angeline. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Clarence; siblings, Haywood (Eleanor), John (Barbara), Jackie (Gary-d.) Donald (Harn itha) , Ronald (Linda) and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. She also leaves to mourn three lifelong friends, Regina "Pretty Girl" Randall, Marlene Lawrence and Libby Allen; in addition to two special caregivers, Josetta Dennis and Phyllis Washington.
