IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Rachel N.
Ford
December 9, 1924 – August 4, 2017
Rachel Ford
daughter of the late Columbus and Henrietta Hill, was born
December 9,1924 in Baltimore MD. She departed this life August 4,2017.
She courageously battled failing health, after a severe fall earlier this year.
We will all miss her dearly.
Rachel received her education in the Baltimore City Public School System,
graduating from Frederick Douglas High School in 1942.
After high school, Rachel relocated to New York City, to work in the
telephone system there. After a number of years she returned to Baltimore
and was married to William Patterson of New York. From this marriage
Rachel had a son, Richard, and 4 years later her daughter, Marilyn.
Rachel found her career employment with Colonial Pharmacy, which was
located in Pikesville, Maryland. She started as a pharmacy clerk, .but after
many years of service, she managed their extensive inventory, which includ-
ed general goods, alcoholic goods, and pharmaceutical goods. Colonial
Pharmacy was purchased by Rite Aid corporation, which Rachel retired
from in 1989.
Rachel loved to travel. She enjoyed going on cruises and trips to the beach.
She loved Rehobeth and Virginia beaches. She also loved to return to New
York City, where she would take in a play and shopping. Rachel also
enjoyed playing scrabble with Marilyn and Brian. At last count she won
more than loss.
When Rachel returned to Baltimore, she rejoined the St. John African
Methodist Episcopal Church, under the pastorial leadership of Reverend
Benjamin S. Foust. She regularly attended worship services, women minis-
try meetings, and afternoon soul school sessions. Upon turning 90 years of
age, Rachel was acknowledged as one of the Church Mothers. She was often
sought out for her sweet smile, gentle manners, and words of wisdom.
Rachel was preceded in death by her son Richard, in 1979. She is survived
by her devoted daughter, Marilyn Burnett; grandson Brian and his wife
Paula Burnett; great grandson Aaron and his wife Melissa Burnett-Turner;
great granddaughter Ciara Lauren Burnett, and great great grand children
Gary, Neveah, and Aaron Jr., and a host of family friends.
