Obituary

Raymond Lee Shields, the son of Charity Shields and the late Preston Shields, was born January 13, 1952 in Baltimore, Maryland. He departed this life on Saturday, November 8, 2008 after a lenghty illness. As a child Raymond attended New Light Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Shields Gospel Singers with his brothers and sisers. Raymond received his education i the Baltimore City public school system and was employed at the Done-rite Construction Company. Raymond married his sweetheart Olivia affectionately known as Chicken on February 17, 1975 and they raised their three children Patricia, Ramon and Damon. The role of father came naturally to Raymond; his children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. In addition to the constant support and love he received from his loving wife, children and mother; raymond enjoyed the comfort and love of his movies, dinner, shopping, or vacationing with them. During his childhood, Raymond loved to play softball, football, and spend time with family and friends but most of al he loved singing. When Raymond turned eleven, he joined and became the lead singer for Little Ray and the Playboys. Two years later he joined Frankie and the Spindles. During his successful singing career, Raymond was vey proud of his many accomplishments including several hit songs "Making Up Time", "Count to Ten", and "There is a Beauty" just to name a few. Raymond comes a family of talented vocalists and enjoyed singing along with his brother Joe Shields and cousin Jay-Jay Wiggins in The Spindles Group. Raymond, a lead vocalist, was a baritone and second tenorand provided the group with high energy and a lot of personality. Raymond vowed to be with The Spindles forever. Among the many things he liked to do, his favorites were shopping at Wal-Mart and Forman Mills, listening to oldies but goodies after coming home from work and spending time with his grandchildren. He leaves to mourn: his wife, Olivia Shields; three children, Patricia Powell, Ramon and Damon Shields; his mother, Charity Shields; four grandchildren, Tyshae, Ashante, Ryan and Ahmad; brother, Joe Shields, Jr; six sisters, Lizzie Shields, Ella Ames, Virginia Wilkes, Florence Sims, Diane Burton and Brenda Freeman he was proceded in death by his brother Prston Shields, Jr.; mother-in-law, Edna Montague; brother-in-law, Charles, Michael, Julius, Mark, Elwood, Lonnie, Norman, Mike, Jerry and William; sister-in-law, Debbie, Theresa, Ophelia, Lelia, Marion, Vanessa, Mary, Evelyn, Brenda, Paula and Jesse; two daughters-in-law, Kimara and Roslyn Shields Jr.; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including a devoted best friend Ellis Beatty.
