Obituary

RICHARD LEE SELBY, son of the late Ella Powell and James Curtis, was born on September 15, 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was raised by his mother, Ella Powell and stepfather, Isaac Powell. He departed this earthly life on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

Richard received his education in Baltimore City Public School System. He accepted Christ at an early age and became an ordained minister. He was better known as ‘Reverend’ or ‘Mr. Rich’, but he was always ‘PopPop’ to his grandchildren.

Richard and Ms. Mae Helen Brantley were united in Holy Matrimony on May 8, 1966 at Holy Mount Zion A.M.E Church and out of this union, three daughters were born: Sharron, Antionette, and Lynette.

Richard had his own residential repair enterprise, called, Richard L. Selby’s Painting and Home Improvement Company, in Baltimore City. He not only worked in the city, but he also renovated and serviced homes in other surrounding counties. He has traveled as far as the Eastern Shore for some home improvement jobs. Richard also provided summer employment for the neighborhood teenage boys, granting them the opportunity to learn hands-on home improvement skills and earn a light wage for school clothes. He later worked as a contractor for NSA in Fort Meade, Maryland. In the late 1970's, he worked for the University of Maryland Medical Center in facility maintenance. Richard continued working, until his health started to fail him.

Richard was preceded in death by his mother, Ella Powell; stepfather, Isaac Powell; sisters, Rosa Lee and Linda; and his brothers, Tyrone and Solomon.

Richard leaves to cherish his memory: daughters, Sharron Sheppard (Perry, Sr.), Antoinette Selby, and Lynette Selby; sisters, Catherine Dorsey, Constance Mack, and Eloise Black brothers, Michael Powell, Jerome Powell, and Allen Powell grandchildren, Army Captain (CPT) Perry N. Sheppard, Jr. (Makayla), Lauren Sheppard, Tyrin Conway and Britain Hamilton; and a host of nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, friends and loved ones.
