ROLAND AUGUSTUS BROWN, JR., affectionately called "Poppy,"
departed this life on December 26, 2015 after a short illness.
The fourth of seven children, Roland was born on January 24,
1932, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Roland Augustus Brown, Sr. and
Grace Ann Johnson Brown.
He attended the "old" Frederick Douglass High School, located on
Calhoun Street, where he excelled in academiCS and sports. Upon
graduation, in 1950, Roland attended Hampton Institute, now known
as Hampton University, on a football scholarship. He played guard on
the football team and ironically his younger brother, George, would
eventually play the same position on the same team after Roland
graduated, in 1954.
Mer college, Roland entered the United States Army as a commissioned
officer, with a rank of Second Lieutenant, and later was promoted
to First Lieutenant. He served our country honorably. Mer
completing his military service, he accepted a position within the
Federal Government as the Director of Relocation, in the United States
Department of Housing and Urban Development. He commuted, by train, from
Baltimore to Washington D.C., every day, for nearly forty years until he retired.
Roland joined Ebenezer A.M.E. Church as a child and remained a
faithful servant of God until his sunset. It was most apparent through
his love for his community and his tireless efforts to help others in
need. Each day he stopped by his church, which was two blocks away,
to check on the building and the administrative assistant during his
two-mile walk. On Sunday mornings he saved parking spaces, near
the church, for the elderly parishioners. He also spent countless hours
assisting MANY people with their applications for
medicare, veteran's benefits, housing and various other services. Memorial Service Joseph H. Brown Jr. Funeral Home
