Hobbs

Roosevelt L. Hobbs, son of Roosevelt and Olivia Hobbs was born on
May 13, 1934 in Dinwiddie, Virginia. He departed this life on June 13, 2018
after a courageous battle with a number of illnesses.
Roosevelt, affectionately known as LeRoy, was introduced to his future
wife Madeline "Betty" West by his sister Sara. LeRoy and Betty later married
on December 24, 1960. They were married 56 years until his recent demise.
Although they never had children together, they often referred to Jamie Harvey,
as their Godson.
LeRoy loved spending time in VA with his daughter Beatrice McLeod and her
husband Mac. He adored his grandsons Austin, Esq. and Darren; and was quite,
proud of their accomplishments (both graduated from Harvard University).
LeRoy was educated in Nottoway County, Virginia. He migrated to Baltimore in
search of a job in barbering. He graduated with a B.A. in history from Morgan
State College in 1954. While attending Morgan, LeRoy participated in the Army
ROTC program, was initiated in the Perishing Rifles Association and pledged
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He became an active member of the
Morgan State University Alumni Association. He later received a M.S.
degree in education from Towson State College in 1974.
LeRoy had an outstanding career as an educator and school administrator in
the Baltimore City Public School System. He served as a principal of the Johnson
Square Elementary School.
A beloved, life-time member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., LeRoy loved being
a "Que". He was always seen wearing his purple and gold hat and jacket. He
frequently attended national and regional conferences, while traveling with his
many fraternity brothers. The highlight of his many years of service as an
Omega Man included attending the annual Omega Mardi Gras Scholarship
Ball and his selection as the "Omega Man of the Year" in 2000.
LeRoy was an avid reader. His book collection contained many volumes on social,
political, cultural and religious topics related to the African-American experience.
He was always eager to discuss what he recently read and was known to
share his books with friends and relatives.
LeRoy enjoyed photography. He took thousands of pictures! He and Betty
traveledthe country taking photographs of historical events, celebrities and
dignitaries such as Muhammad Ali, Oprah Winfrey, Alex Haley and the
inauguration of Virginia's first Black Governor, L. Douglas Wilder.
To the glory of the Lord, LeRoy accepted Christ as his Savior before
departing this life on June 13,2018.
LeRoy's brothers John Edward Hobbs, Aubrey Hobbs along with
his sister Sara Arlene Redmond and Laura Lee Green preceded him
in death.
LeRoy leaves to celebrate his life, his wife Betty, brother
Colonel P. Hobbs[Maxine] of Raleigh, NC, sister Rosa Lee Jackson
[David] of Blackstone, VA, daughter, Beatrice McLeod [Mac] of Richmond,
VA, grandsons, Austin of NY, NY and Darren, Washington D.C., best friend
Lawrence Green, Jamie Harvey, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins,
God children, fraternity brothers and other relatives and friends.
