Obituary

Roosevelt Brown Sr., the oldest child of Sherman and Gassie Brown was born on December 29, 1927 in Haleburg, Alabama. He transitioned to his heavenly home on April 26, 2012. Roosevelt was reared in a strong Christian home with seven children. During his early childhood, he attended the public school system of Houston county Alabama. At the age of twelve, Roosevelt accepted Christ and became a member of the Philadelphia Baptist Church of Houston County. In 1947, he relocated to Baltimore, Maryland where he was employed at General Refactory Company. He retired after thirty-five years of service. After retiring, he established his own landscaping business which prospered for sixteen years. Roosevelt continued his education at The Baltimore School of Business. Also in 1947, he joined the Historic Leadenhall Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Madison Crenshaw Allen. He was ordained a Deacon in 1966. During his sixty-five years of membership, he was a very active participant within various ministries to include; the Deacon Ministry, Usher Ministry, Male Chorus, Brotherhood, the Security Ministry, Transportation Ministry, Monday Community Eat Together Program, Noonday Prayer & Praise Service, Wednesday bible Class and Sunday School. In 1972, he was honored by his church as "Father of The Year." In November 1950, Roosevelt enlisted as a Private First Class in the United States Army and transferred to the Army Reserve in 1952 until 1956 when he received an Honorable Discharge. In addition to his church involvement, he was an active member in many organizations namely; Mt. Horeb Lodge #24 of the Prince Hall Masons and Royal Arch Masons. On July 10, 1955, Roosevelt married the love of his life the former Edith Lee Ricks. From this union were blessed with three children, Roosevelt Jr., Edith Ernestine, and Erika Lee who preceded him in death. In everything Roosevelt did he put God in the center. He was affectionately known by everyone as "Daddy Ro". He never had much to say but when he spoke he was full of wisdom and knowledge. He was well versed on almost any subject from the Bible, gardening, local news, national news, politics, sports, home improvement, car maintenance, plumbing, cooking, house cleaning, the best remedies for aliments, canning fruits, and predicting the weather. Daddy Ro was a praying warrior and was not a shame to proclaim Him to everyone he met. He had a very special granddaughter, Dominique. There are so many fond memories of Daddy Ro, Grand Daddy, Deacon Brown, Brother Roosevelt, Uncle Ro, Cousin Ro, Booster, Roosevelt and Mr. Brown. To know him was to love him. He leaves to cherish his memories, one son, Roosevelt Brown Jr; two daughters Marsh Brooks, Edith Ernestine Ricks Brown-Johnson; one-son-in-love, Timothy D. Johnson; one grandson, Dominic D. Brown; six granddaughters, Arletta House-Dailey, Thetius House, Rikiah House, Khalilah Johnson, Michelle Johnson- Shipp, Tashawna Sawyer; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, SB Brown Geneva, Marzell Brown; three sisters, Dorothy Davis WhimsleyBobby Hill, Alice Young; one brother-in-love, Adger Harvin II; two-sisters-in-love, Ruth Ricks, Joyuce Ricks; three godchildren, Gary Steen, Chad Allen, Thomas E. DawsonIII, many devoted and loving nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, extended family and friends and later in life his devoted care giver, companion and friend, Cynthia Wilder.
