Obituary

"For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. II 2 Corinthians 5:1 We celebrate the life and spirit of our beloved RUTH JOAN BROWN who joined our Lord in His eternal embrace on April 24th, 2014. Ruth was born on August 27th, 1932 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. She was the only child of the late James and Carrie Galloway. Ruth grew up on Archer Street in South Baltimore, surrounded by her cousins and other family members. As a young lady, Ruth was determined to have a full career doing something that she enjoyed. She had a passion for helping people, no matter how great or small the need. Ruth was affectionately known as "Punchie" by most everyone who knew her. She relished in her desire to help others and as a result, Ruth chose a career in nursing. She worked hard to keep her grades up and to pay her way through nursing school. Upon graduation she began a flourishing career, providing health care. On February 16th, 1952 Ruth was united in holy matrimony with her husband, Daniel Webster Brown. From this union four daughters were born, Debra, Ruth, Sandra and Janet. Ruth was a child of God who truly loved the Lord. She read her bible on a daily basis along with other religious literature, for strength and guidance. She taught her children to always put God first in their lives. Her favorite scripture was "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart: and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths." Proverbs 3:5-6 Ruth was very outgoing and thrived in social settings. She had a heart of gold and a smile that would light up a room. She received the Five Degrees of Order from the Eastern Star in Mount Lebanon, Chapter 27. She also enjoyed being a member of the Lunch Club at Catholic Charities, where she made many friends. Ruth enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family. She especially enjoyed spoiling all of her grandchildren, who lovingly knew her as "Gran Gran". Ruth was an excellent cook and hosted many cook-outs, where all who came enjoyed her specialty dishes. She was known for her chicken 'n' dumplings, barbequed ribs and her potato salad. Ruth also loved to shop and was very meticulous about her appearance, whether it was her starched white uniforms or her dress clothes and heels. She also loved playing Bingo and dancing, especially line dancing. In her spare time, she enjoyed listening to jazz and gospel music. Her favorite gospel song was I'] Won1t Complain" by Reverend Paul Jones. She leaves to cherish her memory: four daughters, Debra Hicks, Ruth Joan Brown, Sandra Ann Brown, Janet Maria Brooks; four grandchildren, Darrell Roderick Brown, Laurie Michelle Hicks, Shayla Marie Brooks, Shekara Monet Brooks; one great-grandson, Darrell Roderick Brown Jr.; one great-great-granddaughter, Amiyah Brown; one aunt, four sisters-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other special relatives and friends.
