Ruth Geraldine McLarin was born on October 21, 1935, to the late James and Annie Edwards, in Winston Salem, North Carolina. She was the eldest of two children. She attended Atkins High School in Winston Salem and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Morgan State University in Maryland. Ruth also received a Master's Degree from Morgan State University and performed her post-graduate work at the University of Maryland and Howard University. In addition to this, she worked three years as a Microbiologist at the old Provident Hospital. Ruth was later employed by the Anne Arundel Public School System for 35 years, where she taught both Math and Science. While teaching, she served as a union representative, a member of the Faculty Council and an advisor to the Student Council. After her retirement, she continued to teach night school for an additional five years. Ruth was baptized into Morning Star Baptist Church in 1970. As a member, she continued to enjoy working with the youth. She taught Sunday School until 2005, reorganized the Junior Usher Board in 1979, and established an Intermediate Usher Board for teens in the 1980s. She also began a tutorial program, in the 1980s that met twice a week. In addition to this, Ruth served as a member of the Trustee Board, the Senior Usher Board, the Pearls of Wisdom, and the Christian Newsletter and once served as Chairperson to the Women's Day celebration. In addition to her activities within the church, Ruth was active in the community. She served as a secretary and a member of the Board of Directors for the Woodside Community Association. She was a member of the Freetown Community Association, where she served as co-publisher of the Community Newsletter. Ruth was also a member of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa (teacher's sorority), Alpha Mu Chapter, where she served as chairman to their scholarship program. She also participated as a member of the "US" club, for recreational vehicles. Ruth is survived by her husband Benjamin McLarin, daughter Jo-Anna Griffith, sister Velma Bethea, niece Kristy Taylor, nephews, Franklin and Basil Bethea, step-children, Benjamin [r., Benita, Kimberly, Michelle and Melinda, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, great nieces, nephews and step- grandchildren. Ruth lived a long and fulfilling life in which she loved to travel, and had opportunities to visit several countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, South America the Caribbean and various states in the Union, to include Alaska and Hawaii.
