IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sammie L.
Lane, Sr.
May 7, 1936 – January 2, 2019
Sammie Lee Lane was born in Camden, South Carolina on
May 7, 1936 to the late Isom and Rectina Lane. He was the youngest
of nine children. Sammie received his education in Camden, SC,
but had to leave school at a young age to work on the family farm.
In
1954, Sammie moved to Baltimore, Maryland to make a better
life for himself. A year later, he returned to South Carolina to marry
his sweetheart Mary Joy. They were married on December 24, 1955
then moved to Baltimore, Maryland. Out of that union, 11 children
were born, including two sets of twins.
In
the early 1960's, Sammie met the late Bishop S. C. Johnson
and Bishop J .B. Thornton. These two preachers taught him about
salvation through Jesus Christ. He was baptized in the name of Jesus
Christ and filled with the gift of the Holy Ghost in 1963. He later
attended United Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic, Inc. under the
leadership of Bishop J. B. Thornton. He had a good singing VOIce
and traveled singing as one of the quartet members.
Sammie left the church, but continued to teach his children the
way of the Lord. He stated that he wanted to give his children
the best that he had. He said the best that he had was JESUS.
At night, he would call all of his children around his bed to pray.
Occasionally, he had bible study after prayer.
Sammie spent his working career as a construction worker.
When he drove family and friends to various destinations, he
found joy in pointing out the many buildings that he
took part in building.
Sammie was a man who loved to dress well. He was a friendly
and witty man, who enjoyed making jokes to make, family, friends,
and strangers laugh. One of his favorite pastimes was hanging out
with his nieces and nephews, who loved him dearly.
Sammie had a passion for helping the poor and dying children in
3rd world countries. He faithfully gave monthly contributions to
several organizations to help alleviate their sufferings. He
answered the call toadopt some of the children, by paying for their
essentials. In his home, he proudly displayed the pictures of his
newly adopted family.
Later in y_ears, Sammie often talked about God's goodness, and
served in homeless shelters. He started passing out "The Bible
Promise Book," at Lexington Market and other locations. He
purchased these books in bulk and *ave them to whomever he
came in contact with, and would say, "make sure you read it. '
When Sammie's health started to failed, he began to draw closer
to the Lord. God's goodness and mercies allowed Sammie to get
hIS soul right. On January 2nd the battle Sammie fought for so
long came to an end. God called him home to take his rest. Sammie
