Samuel Columbus Gaither Sr., the son of the late Minerva Williams and Thomas Gaither, was born on January 30, 1915 in Anne Arundel County. After a year of illnesses he departed this life on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at Mariner Health Care facility on Furnace Branch Rd. He attended the Marley Neck School. He worked for the Davidson Chemical Company, the International Longshoreman's Association. He was self employed as a farmer. He took great pride in planting and harvesting his crops, selling his produce at local markets and at his roadside stand. Sam was a sincere, dedicated member of Hall U.M. Church for more than 65 years serving as a trustee, a member of the finance committee, Camp meeting chairperson at the snack booth, and a member of the United Methodist Men. He worked hard to become Man of the Year on Men's Day. The Homecoming Committee depended on him for donations of fresh kale or collard greens, sweet potatoes, white potatoes or turnips for the big feast. Sam was married to the former Jestine Queen, who departed this life on June 20, 1999. He is survived by their children, Carroll Gaither, Yvonne G.Henry ,Marvin Gaither and Samuel Gaither Jr. Pop. He has seven grandchildren, Carroll Gaither, Randy Gaither, Crystal Roberts, Valerie Cook, Dionne Warren, Dianne Peterson and Graig Smith. He is great-grandfather of 13. He also leaves to mourn; two daughters-in-law, LaVern Gaither and Beverly Gaither; one brother, Gerald Gaither; five sisters Mary Gaither, Josephine Sedgwick, Bertha Jackson, Doris Muldrow and Ruth Parker. He was preceded in death by his brother Frisby Gaither and sisters Thelma Carson, Aleen Rhodes and Ada Watts. He will be missed by six brothers-in-law, seven sisters-in-law and a host of other relatives and friends.
