Samuel M. Johnson, son of the late Samuel and Mary Berger Johnson, was born on December 17, 1919 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was called from labor to reward on Thursday, April 19, 2012. Samuel received his education in the public schools of Baltimore City. He accepted Christ at an early age and attended the Morning Star baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. Samuel was united in marriage to the late Edna Fields Johnson on March 18, 1944. Out of their union were born two sons, the late Samuel Johnson, Jr. and Clifton Johnson. "Sam and Edna," as they were affectionately known, were inseparable until her demise in 2004. their son, Clifton, has lovingly taken care of Sam since her passing. When the New St. John Baptist Church was founded under the leadership of the late Rev. Andrew C. Brown on June 30 1952, Sam was among its charter members. He was installed as a deacon, and held are; Chairman of the Official Staff, Superintendent of the Sunday School and Sunday School Teacher, Church Treasurer, church Recording Secretary, and member of the Pastor's Aide and Missionary Auxiliaries. He also assisted his wife with the custodial duties of the church. Samuel was musically talented and played the piano on many occasions. He often sang duets with his wife while accompanying her on the piano. Deacon Johnson was steadfast in his attendance and service until he was on longer able to attend. He was officially given the title of Deacon Emeritus by the present Pastor, Rev. Eugene S. McKinney. His presence has been and will continue to be missed by the members of New St. John Baptist Church. Samuel M. Johnson leaves a legacy of love and cherished memories to; his devoted son, Clifton Johnson; his granddaughter, Taffany Johnson; his great-grandson, Timothy Crewford; his grandson, Brandon Johnson; and many relatives and friends.
