Obituary

Sarah Ruth Hough Johnson, was born in Bethune, South Carolina on June 4,1928. She was the youngest of seven children born to the late William Henry and Victoria Lucinda Hough. She, along with her siblings moved to Baltimore, MD in 1936. She made her transition at home on April 9,2017.

Affectionately known as "Mother Johnson" she attended St. Pius School in Baltimore. She was a proud graduate of St. Frances Academy - Class of 1946. She married Raymond Grant Johnson and they became the parents of Gary, Douglass (Carla), Thaus, Patricia, Raymond (Faith) and Melvina. Their son, Corporal LaCurtis H. Johnson (USMC) preceded them in death in 1982. Her husband, Raymond preceded her in death in 1983.

She started working at the age of twelve years old. At that age, she would help her sister, Rosie; clean the homes of wealthy families. Due to her determination to attain a good education, she worked after school to pay tuition, which was fifty cents a week at St. Frances Academy. St. Frances Academy, at that time, was the only Black Catholic school for girls in the city. After graduation, she worked various jobs as a cook, waitress, clerk and housekeeper. She was employed at Maison Antoinette Boutique, Mercy Hospital, Joseph House, Read's Drugstore, the US Post Office and Social Security Administration. From the mid-1960s she was employed as a housekeeper and cook for St. William's of York Church until her retirement in 1995. Mother Johnson was also known for her cooking. She was an avid reader, but her biggest joys were caring for her children and meeting people. She was always willing to listen to others, offer advice or a meal. She had a determined spirit and lived by her truth to treat people with love and kindness. Her generosity led to her being a founding member of the Constructive Thinkers, a group that hosted fundraising events for charity.

Besides her children, she leaves to cherish her sister, Sunnie Johnson; sister-in-law, Pauline Taylor; grandchildren, Antonia Galligan, Bernard Stokes, LaCurtis Johnson, Glenn Smith; Ciera Johnson; great-grandchildren, Bernard Stokes, Raven Stokes, Martell Galligan, Rayna Galligan, Alayna Smith and a host of relatives and friends. Her grandson, LaMont Johnson transitioned 2003. One sister and four brothers preceded her in death.
