On the morning of Saturday May 24, a beautiful, gentle, and kind soul, Deaconess Shirley West, departed her earthly life to take her place in Heaven at the age of 73. Shirley was born on December 08, 1940 in Baltimore Ml) to Oliver and Lessie Slaughter, the youngest girl of 6 children. Shirley was educated through the Baltimore City Public School System. She met and later married Harold West Sr. October 27, 1956 together they had 6 children. Shirley had a great love for taking care of people. She was employed in the healthcare field taking care of the elderly at The Harborview Nursing Home. She later retired from healthcare. She continued volunteering at her grandchildren's school, her church home, and wherever she was needed. Shirley was known as "the life of the party"; even when it was a praise party. She accepted Jesus Christ as her savior October 16, 1981. During her membership of church she served as a missionary, usher, choir member, pastor aide, and deaconess. She had a strong Christian Walk and a strong love for everyone she met. She always did her best to make everyone comfortable. When you came to her home she could 'whip' up a meal to make your stomach full and your soul happy. She prided herself in witnessing to as many that would listen about Jesus Christ. Always knowing the right thing to say, her words were sometimes few but they were meaningful. She would say things to her family like, It is what it is; For the life of me; & It's all good! She was love by many and her achievements were often recognized. She received a 'Parent of the Year Award 'from Northwood Elementary School and numerous recog- nitions from her church home for her continued service. After raising'6 children she mothered 2 more of her grandchildren Donald Wilson Jr. and Shelley L. Brown. Her granddaughter, Shelley, was her "pride & child" that she nurtured into a woman but she was still her baby! Her love for all was so strong and her heart constantly gave even until her passing. A prayer partner, humble servant, and perfect example she will be deeply missed but her beautiful presence will be forever remembered. She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, Harold West Sr.; 6 children, Evon, Deborah, Harold Bernard, Anthony, Lemmuel, & Nina; 2 son-in-laws, Gary and Diadji; 3 daughter-in-laws Theresa, Brenda, & Tracy; many grand children and great grand children; her sister, Mary Smith; her brother, Harold Slaughter Sr.; nieces and nephews and a hosts of other family and friends.
