Obituary

Sonia Antoinette (Hunter) Thomas, the beloved daughter of the late Ethel Hunter Upsher
and Eugene Glover was bom on July 31,1943. On the wings of the Angels, the Lord
called her home to eternal rest on April 11, 2018, surrounded by her family.

Sonia, affectionately known as "MAMA", was the second child of eight children. She
thoroughly enjoyed growing up with her siblings Sylvia, Ronnie, Ronald, Louise, Valerie,
Theodore Jr., Barbara and her cousins, The Squirrels.

Sonia received her education at Houston Wood Middle School and Frederick Douglass
Senior High.

In 1965, Sonia was united in Holy Matrimony and from this union she was blessed with
four children Kimberly, Carmen Jr., Yvonne and Thevella. Sonia dedicated her life to
caring for and nurturing her son Carmen Jr. and her other immediate family members.
She spent her time instilling in them values about life, respect and family love.

After the unexpected death of her beloved son in 1979, she expanded her family by wel-
coming a new bundle of joy, her daughter, Anastacia, into her heart. In addition, she was
instrumental in raising her extended children Hope and Michael. Sonia's family was her
true passion in life.

As a young adult, Sonia was baptized and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and personal
Savior. She enjoyed attending church and listening to gospel music.

During her early years, Sonia provided daycare services for family members and close
friends. Later, sne was employed at the Alton House then became a Lead Supervisor at
Townhouse Motel Inn until her retirement In her retirement she became a volunteer in the
gift shop at the University of Maryland- Keman where she had the opportunity to share
her light, love and kind words witn passersby.

Sonia was a kind, loving and generous person with a giving and caring .personaI ity who
made friends wherever she went. She expressed much love as well as affection to every-
body. Her home was a unique place where her family and friends would gather for her
splendid cooking and enjoyment.

The holidays were very special to her. During Thanksgiving and Christmas, she made it a
familv tradition to spend time baking pies, cakes and COOKies. Christmas was her favorite
holiday. She loved Christmas shopping for her family and decorating her tree. She also
enjoyed summer cookouts, fireworks displays and watching her great grand babies
Camora, Colby and Noah swim in the pool in her back yard.

Sonia enjoyed traveling to New York City to see Broadway Musicals such as her favorite,
The Color Purple. She also loved traveling to Myrtle Beach and Dutch Country. She en-
joyed watching classics such as "Imitation of Life", "Cooley High", "To Kill a Mockingbird"
and "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" but her favorite was "The Bad Seed". She
treasured going out with her family to watch the Raven's games (where she wore her jer-
seys during every game), eating her favorite foods (crab cakes with catfish) and she loved

attending super bowl parties. .

In 2004, Sonia was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and was told that it was unlikely to
survive beyond five years with the condition. She gave her problems to the Lord and she
continued to live her life with a beautiful smile and positive outlook. As a result, she sur-
vived 14 years and was told by her doctor that she was the most courageous patient he'd
ever cared for. Many women do noble things, our Lady Love Mama surpassed them ALL

In 2013, after the passing of her beloved sisters Louise and Valerie, she took on a matemal
role for their children, nurturing, guiding and protecting them as her own.

OUR BELOVED MATRIARCH, was a proud, devoted, dedicated daughter, mother, sister,
aunt, grandmother, great·grandmother, cousin and friend. She had an extra special bond
with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her love for each one is ever-
lasting. She will be sincerely missed by everyone but never ever forgotten.

Sonia was preceded in death by her son Carmen Jr.; two sisters Louise and Valerie; and
three brothers, Ronald, Theodore and Ronnie.

Sonia was blessed to have the support of her loving family and leaves to cherish her mem-
ories and legacy her devoted daughters Kimberly, Yvonne, Thevella, Hope and Anastacia;
one son-in-law Darron; nine devoted qrandchildren Bennie, Genai, Brittany, Jessica,
Jereme, Darrian, Diamond, Nykia and Shanae; five great grandchildren Camora, Colby,
Noah, Bennie IV and Ptolemy; two sisters Sylvia Gibson ana Barbara D. Hunter; one de-
voted sister-in-law Barbara C. Hunter; her cousins The Squirrels, four goddaughters, her
dedicated best friend Bemice Jackson, The Pitcher Street Ladies, three bonus sisters, her
Whatcoat Street family, and a host of dedicated nieces, nephews, cousins, great friends
and relatives.
