IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Stuart D.
Armstead, Jr.
June 24, 1949 – January 18, 2019
Stuart Douglas Armstead, Jr. was born on Friday, June 24, 1949, to the late Mr. Stuart
Douglas Armstead, Sr. and Mrs. Alma Naomi Armstead, in Baltimore, Maryland. He is the
second child and only son, of the four Armstead children. Stuart quietly departed this life on
Friday, January 18,2019, after a long-term, intermittently medical issue stemming from his
military service. Stuart was surrounded by family at his home when the Lord called him home
for eternal rest.
Stuart was affectionately known as "Dougie" to the Armstead and Conway families, friends,
previous co-workers, neighbors, and all others he met in his 69-year life journey.
Dougie accepted the Lord as his Savior during his childhood, when the (late) Mr. and Mrs.
Armstead and their four children, worshipped at the John Wesley United Methodist Church,
Glen Burnie, Maryland. During his adult life, Dougie attended and supported the LIFE Church
Ministries, Baltimore, Maryland.
Dougie was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served this country during the
Vietnam War era. Dougie was assigned to the prestigious 11 th Armored Cavalry, known in
military circles as, "The Blackhorse" unit. Dougie was a highly decorated military veteran and
received the following medals and awards: The Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal,
Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
Dougie also received two Army Commendation Medals for Heroism in the Republic of Vietnam,
on January 15, 1970 and April 1, 1970. These military awards and medals are given to those
who have distinguished himself by heroism, meritorious achievement and meritorious service.
In addition to these awards, the military also provided him with the completion of his high
school education, in 1969, when he was stationed at the Fort Knox post in Kentucky. After
being honorably discharged from the military, Dougie returned home to Maryland and took a
position with the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC). Dougie was a Senior
Plant Operator at WSSC with major responsibility for ensuring the safe operation and
maintenance of the WSSC Patuxent Water Treatment Plant in Laurel, Maryland. Dougie worked
for WSSC for 26 years; retiring in September 2000.
Dougie married the love of his life, Deborah Diana Anderson on October 24, 1981, who we
all know as "Debbie." From this marital union, Dougie and Debbie had two children: Ty'Nisha
Diana Armstead and Brandon Douglas Armstead. Dougie was most proud of Ty'Nisha and
Brandon and supported all their accomplishments. He was most delighted that Ty'Nisha had
become an elementary school teacher with the Howard County Public Schools. Dougie was very
pleased that Brandon secured a position supporting the federal government. He was delighted
when Ty'Nisha and Brandon each purchased their own home so that he could help them with all
their home projects.
Dougie was a man with a quiet spirit. He was often the quietest person in the room, but truly
enjoyed the love, closeness and affection of his immediate family-Debbie, Ty'Nisha and
Brandon--and of his close-knit Armstead family. Dougie had many hobbies and talents. He loved
doing home improvement projects. The Armstead house always had the best manicured lawn
in their Old Mill neighborhood. Dougie's favorite hobby was working on old cars--fixing them
up so that they can run like new. His all-time favorite car project was the restoration of the
1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS. Dougie would take Debbie and the kids "joy-riding," just so that
they could ride in his "new" car. Dougie also loved to put together vintage model cars. He and
his father Stuart collected the annual Hess Trucks and he passed the tradition down to his son
Brandon. Dougie also loved to travel; his most recent trip was an Alaskan cruise. For Debbie's
60th Birthday, Dougie surprised Debbie with a trip to Las Vegas, only for Debbie to discover
upon arrival, that her birthday trip just happened to be the same weekend as the 26th Annual
Meecum Vintage Car Show and Auction. The couple joyously spent her birthday looking at, and
learning about, vintage cars. But Debbie made sure Dougie did not bid on any vintage cars.
Dougie's favorite NFL team was the Oakland Raiders. He had all types of clothing and
accessories with the Oakland Raiders black and silver team colors and emblem on it. When it
was time to watch the televised Oakland Raiders games, Dougie would fully dress in all his
Oakland Raiders clothing, as a measure of good-luck, as he sat in front of the television. He
loved the Oakland Raiders so much that his Man Cave television room showcased that he
was the Oakland Raiders #1 fan. Dougie was delighted to inform you that the Oakland Raiders
had won the Super Bowl in 1977, 1981 and 1984. Dougie enjoyed fishing with his fishing
buddies, Arthur Randolph, Charles Cameron, and Jay White. Every Thanksgiving morning, for
years, Dougie and Charles Cameron would participate in the annual "Pie Run" at the South
County Cafe in Deale, Maryland-a fall event where vintage car enthusiast would meet to
display their restored cars and purchase a variety of homemade pies for Thanksgiving dinner.
Dougie leaves to cherish his memories, his loving and caring wife of 37 years, Debbie
Armstead; two devoted children: Ty'Nisha and Brandon Armstead; his supportive siblings:
Diane Armstead, Sharon (Loren) Purnell, Kim (Ian) Gaither; his aunt, Barbara (George) Queen;
and aunt, May Armstead (William, deceased); four brothers-in-law: Harold (Marcella) Conway,
Bruce Conway, Kenneth Anderson, Jr., and Carl Anderson; and three sisters-in-law: Kimberly
(Leonard) Green, Carla Anderson, and Adrienne (Andre) Suber; and a host of nieces, nephews,
cousins, and friends.
