IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sylvia
Harry
June 19, 1941 – April 23, 2022
Sylvia Ann Hooper-Harry was born on June 19, 1941 in Baltimore, Md. to Gilbert
Hooper and Bernice Fields. Both of them preceded her in death. Sylvia departed this life
after a lengthy illness on April 23, 2022 at 5:15 p.m. at the Future Care Good Samaritan
Nursing Home.
Sylvia had many ups and downs in life, but she always pushed her way through them.
She never gave up. Sylvia was determined to do whatever she had to do in order to get
any task successfully completed.
Sylvia received her education in the Baltimore City Public Schools. She was a hard
worker and held various jobs throughout her life. Sylvia was employed at Western
Electric for many years. She also worked at the Sweetheart Cup Company. Sylvia
followed her passion of caring for others. Therefore, she pursued a career as a private
duty nurse by obtaining her certification from a Nursing Institute in Baltimore. She
occasionally allowed Darlene to assist her in caring for her patients.
Sylvia married Ray Harry in 1967. She often traveled with him on his long distance
tractor-trailer trips. This allowed her to visit many states across America.
Sylvia enjoyed making ceramics. Some of her artwork is still in the homes of her family
members and friends. She was an avid and devoted reader who enjoyed reading all
sorts of books and magazines. Sylvia's greatest passion was completing Word Search
Puzzle Books. It was one of her favorite pastimes. Sylvia collected and stored them in
her home just as people collect comic books. She was crowned the "Undisputed
Champion" for solving Word Search Puzzles. Therefore, she saw to it that a puzzle book
was always within her reach or inside of her pocket book. While attending the Active
Day Center Program she won an award for being the fastest word search puzzle solver
of all the participants in the contest. Sylvia inspired the doctors and nurses at her facility
to use Word Search Puzzles as a meaningful tool that the other patients could use for
enjoyment, rehabilitation, and for stimulating their minds. One day while trying to hold
on to one of her puzzle books she accidentally lost her balance and had a fall. When the
nurses came to her aid she was more interested in preventing her Word Search Book
from falling down the steps than herself. Sylvia's love of solving these puzzles continued
until her sight started failing her.
Sylvia loved to watch television game shows. Her favorite shows included the Price is
Right, Family Feud, and Jeopardy. She could have easily become a contestant on
Jeopardy because she had the knowledge to answer the questions. Sylvia also enjoyed
watching the judge shows on television. Her favorite judge was Judge Judy. She would
always laugh when Judge Judy was coming down on the people in her courtroom.
Sylvia's favorite color was "blue." She loved blue; therefore, everything around her had
to be blue. Sylvia enjoyed getting her nails polished and would insist that they be
painted only blue. Sylvia loved to dance and have gatherings at her house. She was
surely an outstanding cook. Her family members and friends enjoyed the delicious meals
that she prepared for them. Sylvia enjoyed steaming crabs, eating strawberry shortcake,
strawberry cheesecake, and drinking strawberry milkshakes. Enjoying a good old corn
beef sandwich from "Jacks" would really make her day. Her favorite breakfast included
bacon, eggs, waffles, and coffee.
Sylvia was raised up in church and was baptized at an early age. However, her real
passion for church blossomed when she met Pastor Luther J. Westbrook, Jr. on a bus
stop when she was on her way to work. Pastor Westbrook invited Sylvia to their Worship
Service then her desire to serve the Lord was reawakened. Sylvia immediately became
an active member of Winston Avenue Baptist Church. While there she served in the
Pastor's Aide Ministry and the Missionary Ministry. Sylvia loved her pastor and church
family dearly and was a very dedicated member. She would often talk about them and
the events that were happening at church to her family and friends.
Pastor Westbrook and the other members of the church would often drive Sylvia back
and forth to church. She attended Worship Services until her health prevented her from
doing so. Sylvia was very excited and appreciative that her Church Farnily attended her
77th birthday party at the nursing home.
Sylvia had a full life and faced many challenges but she was a fighter that wouldn't be
counted out. Sylvia fought her way back many times even though the reports from the
doctors were not always favorable. With the help of the Lord she was able to make it
through every difficult situation.
Now that the Lord has spoken, informing Sylvia that she didn't have to struggle any
longer, He has called her to His sweet rest.
Sylvia leaves to cherish her memory: one son, Gary Hooper (Sandra); three daughters,
Charlene Hooper, Deborah Hooper, and Twila Marshall who (preceded her in death);
nine grandchildren, Shawnette, Gary Jr., Latoya, Dante', Latonya, Nyeesha, Windell,
Tavon, and Tynesha; twenty-one great grandchildren, and five great-great
grandchildren; five brothers, Robert (Darla), William, Gregory (Wanda), and Lawrence
and Torain (who preceded her in death); two sisters, Pastor Darlene Tiller and Belinda
who (proceeded her in death); one uncle, James Thomas (Florence) who preceded her
in death; one great aunt Henrietta Rice who (preceded her in death); and a host of
nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends. Sylvia had some
long time friends, Helena, Collie, Carolyn, Dollbaby, and Sweetie. She also has two god
children, Ricky and Shanell. Her extended family members would include Pastor Luther
J. Westbrook, Jr, and the Winston Avenue Baptist Church Family.
Nothing loved is ever lost. You meant so much to us! God saw the road was getting
rough, the hills were hard to climb, so He closed your weary eyes and whispered "Peace
be thine.
