On February 22, 1963, God blessed the world with an angel, Sylvia Marcella Mayfield, born in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Evelyn Poncella M. Johnson and Woodrow Mayfield. She departed this life on February 4, 2010. She received her education from the Baltimore City Public Schools. She graduated from Liberty Elementary School, Greenspring Junior High and Douglas High School music program. She also attended coppin State college for Business Administration. Sylvia then went to work for BBL Baltimore Biological Laboratory, Franklin Shapiro Law Firm and the Baltimore City Traffic Division for a short time. She loved to work with children and faithfully served as a substitute in the Baltimore City public schools. Sylvia loved the Lord! She grew up in Perkin Square Baptist Church as a Junior Missionary and Youth Choir member. Sylvia continued her Christian journey visiting St. Mark's Baptist Church and Doswell Cathedral. As a young girl Sylvia enjoyed dressing as twins with her sister and taking family trips. They did everything togather. She also really enjoyed singing. Sylvia was a faithful member of the Restoration Band Towanda in her teenage years. She enjoyed being a Girl Scout Brownie. Sylvia was fondly known to family and friends as "Silk". She loved music, gambling, singing and goin to the beach. She loved gathering with the family for special occasions. Her birthday was always a big bash. she loved to eat seafood. Sylvia touched the lives of many people. She made numerous friends wherever she went and will sincerely be missed by everyone who knew her. On February 4, 2010 at 7:00 a.m., after serving humankind and fighting the good fight of faith, God transitioned Sylvia from her labor to His reward. And although He called His angel home, her lagacy continues through her four children, Tekeya Mayfield, Walter Handy Jr., Teresa Handy and Michael Mayfield; three grandchildren, Katlyn Handy, Lavel Hany and Jenesis Harris; father Woodrow Mayfield; one sister Wendy Brown; one broth-in-law, Mark Brown; two nieces, Erika Fitch, Krystal Fitch; one nephews, Andre Baldwin Jr.; tow aunts, Dorothy Mae, Evangelist Elizabeth McCall; one uncle, Andrew Nance; four devoted friends, Walter Handy Dr., Rita Turner, Cynthia Gilchrist and Ms. Connie Jones; and a host of other relatives and friends.
