VIOLA RHODES-BROOKS, was born in Southwest Baltimore, Maryland
into the working class family of Aaron Rhodes and Irene Johnson- Rhodes. Viola
Rhodes was married in holy matrimony to Chase Brooks who preceded her in passing.
Momma Vi as she was affectionately known was educated in Baltimore City
public schools; starting her working career at Read's drugstore on the corner of
lexington and Liberty streets before moving on to S.5. Kresge's department store at
lexington and Park Avenue in Baltimore's old historic downtown shopping district.
Working the grill in the dining area of Kresge's department store; her nephew
Robert Rhodes who was employed as a young office clerk at Baltimore Gas and
Electric recalls ordering a many hot breakfast for 58 cents which included: 2 eggs
anyway ordered, home fried potatoes and two pieces of toast with butter and a cup
coffee and a smile from Momma Vi. After moving up to cashier and upon retirement
after 25 plus years: Momma Vi did not stop as she was immediately employed by
Faidley's Seafood located in World Famous lexington Market encountering and
meeting many people from all walks of life during her 30 plus years at Faidley's until
at the age of 92 when illness forced her to stop.
Momma Vi made many friends at her work locations and was always ready
and able to dispense advice about the simple ethics of the longevity of life and
employment. "Be nice to people and treat people like you want to be treated. Come to
work each and every work day assigned on time, do your job to the best of your ability,
pay your bills on time and save some money." She would always ask "are you
working, if not, why, or I go to work every day why can't you?"
Viola Brooks leaves to mourn her passing: her son Walter R. Rhodes of
Baltimore, Maryland; daughters Viola Brown (Walter) of Baltimore; Gloria Gerrard
(Wayne) of Chicago, Hlinois; and Eula lambert of Newark, New Jersey. Momma Vi
also leaves to mourn her surviving sister Bertie Rhodes-Gibson of Baltimore, brother
Billy Rhodes of New York. A special grand-daughter Gloria "Tinker" Houston and
many more nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great grand nieces,
grand nephews, relatives, friends, co-workers and many others that longevity of life
affords.
She was preceded in her transition by another son Nathaniel 'Mister'
Brooks, as well as her parents; brothers Charles Rhodes and Carrol Rhodes (Cora) of
Baltimore. Sisters: Rosie Rhodes-Justice (Floyd) of Cleveland, Ohio; Berdella Rhodes-
Saunders (leslie, Sr.) and niece Deborah Rhodes of Baltimore. Viewing Joseph H. Brown Jr. Funeral Home
