Obituary

Viola Olivia Tutman Lewis was a loving, spiritual woman who believed that God has everything perfectly planned, and the belief empowered her to live an abundant and generous life. Viola was an amazing person who showed her ove for people in everything she did. The eight child of Rober DeSherman Tutmen, Jr. and Viola Haskell Campbell Tutman both deceased, Viola was born in Baltimore, Md. on April 5, 1936. She was one of nine siblings. She departed this life peacefully on December 7, 2011. Viola attended the Baltimore City Public Schools graduating from Frederick Douglas High School in 1953. She graduated from Morgan State College in 1974 and later earned her Master's Degree in Sociology from the University of Maryland Baltimore. Family was the center of Viola's life. She married Ferdinand Henry Lewis and from this union two beautiful children were born. On April 15, 1960, the couple was blessed with a beautiful baby gril whom they named Pamela Yvonne. One year later on November 12, 1961 they were blessed once more, this time with a baby boy - Michael Scott. The children learned to appreciate and care for all types of God's creatures as helpers at the family owned pet store, "Bunny's Jungle." Michael passed away in March 2003. "The Pretty Lady" - that's what most people called her, was beautiful inside and out. Viola was the quintessential "lady" carrying herself with a uique combination of grace, commpassion and joy. viola beleived that everything happened in devine order, and so she had a peace - a true serenity about her; this only enchanced her beautiful spirit and seemed to give her boundless joy. A love of music was paramount in Viola's life. She was an accomplished pianist and organist who continued to work to master her skill until weeks before her death. She began her musical service as a young pianist at her childhood church, Sharon Baptist. After jioning Heritage United Church of Christ as an adult, she volunteered her musical talents and dirested and accompanied the Men's Chorus and the Childrens's Chior whom she worked until she became too ill to play. Though a very humble and private person Viola was a woman of service and when called served as the assisdtant Minister of Music, accompanying the organist during the Sunday morning worship servic. She loved the internationally renowed Morgan State University chior. She was a charter member of the President's committee for the Morgan state University Chior and continued to be an active member of the committee until her death. Church has always been a prominent part of Viola's life. She was a longtime devoted and faithful member. In addition to the choral ministries, Viola paricipated in "The Spirual Renewal Team" and served on the Church council for many years, including as its President. One of her mmost memorable experiences with Heritage was traveling to the Holy Land with her dear friend, Reverend Wendell H. Phillips and other church members. Viola's career path took many turns and including Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Maryland where she served as the Direstor of Program/Fied Supervisor. She also served as Deputy Director for the Maryland Department of the Enviorment until she became compelled to pursue her entrpreneurial dream to open a cookie shop. She had a always mad cookies for gifts at holiday time, and people raved about them saying that they were "the most delicious cookies that they had ever had." Cookie Occasions was born in 1994. Viola and her daughter Pam prepared the best cookies with most decadent presentation in all of baltimore. They featured unique and colorful arrangments for every occasion. The Cookie Occasions business was extremely popular and was featured in Baltimore Magazine as one of the highly successful women-owned businesses in Baltimore. Viola and Pam operated Cookie Occasions in Randalsstown, Md. until retirement, three years ago. To her delight, retirement afforded Viola with more time to spend with her grandchildren. She glowed with pride as Chelsea Michael;s daughter began her geoarchaelogical studies at Hamilton College in the Fall of 2009. From the time that Dylan Pam's first born was a toddler, Viola was deeply moved by his quiet concentration, and she recognized how truly gifted he was in all things "artistic". Her recognition of his talents was confirmed when now before her death Dylan has received five "pre-acceptance" notifacations from the top art school in the country. Her gut instinct proved what she had alway known - things are in divine order! Can you imagine her joy when Dayne Pam's second child demonstrated an interest and talen for playing the piano? Viola took Dayne to piano practice each week and swelled with pride as she watched him play at his semi-annual music recitals. Viola's boudless joy presisted, for she knew that she and her entire family were truly blessed in all things. Viola loved people, and she dedicated her life to helping people understand how to overcome obstacles and reach their potential. There are hundreds of people who will testify about how Miss Viola changed their lives. She cared about every person she met. Whether she was helping to literally clean up her neighborhood through picking up trash or whether she was counceling someone about relationship, Viola worked to make sure that people grew spiritually and holistically so that they could succeed and make a difference for all of us. The Pretty Lady touched so many lives with her quiet, peaceful and joyful spirit. She leaves to continue her lagacy; Her beloved daughter Pamela Guest, son-in-law Anthony Guest, daughter-in-law Nichole Lewis, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two sisters, Isis Teal and Patricia Quales, one brother William Tutman, and a host of family and friends.
