VONZELLA MILLER MURRAY was born in Baltimore, Maryland June 29, 1923, the second of the eight children of Ruth and Robert Miller. She spent a happy childhood in spite of some hardships and being deprived of a number of things. She attended Elementary School #113, and Dunbar Middle and High School. After graduating from Coppin Teachers College, she attended classes from New York University and received a Master's Degree in Education. She was married to Arthur Murray. Of that union, two children were born - a son, Glen and a daughter, Shawn Maria. She retired in 1980 after thirty-four years - twenty-nine years in the classroom with five- and six-year-olds and five more years as a Senior Teacher for grades pre-kindergarten through grade two. After retirement, she was determined to make the best use of her free time by volunteering as a Tour Guide at the Kennedy Institute, reading to the blind on closed-circuit radio, doing story- telling in the schools, and testing four-and five-year-olds, singing on the church choir, doing children's messages and forming a speech- choir for presentations. She enjoyed the theater and playing cards with friends. She is survived by: her son, Glen Murray; daughter, Shawn Livers; grandchildren, Latasha Murray, Nakia Gladden and Stephen Livers; great-grandchildren, Kalen Maddox and Nixen Gladden; and a host of nieces and nephews.
