Obituary

Wally Pendergrass, Jr., son of the late Hattie Mouzon-Pendergrass and Wally Pendergrass, Sr., was born on August 19, 1942, in Alcolu, South Carolina. He departed this life on February 5, 2021 after a lengthy illness.

Wally, also known affectionately as Junior, received his education in the Manning Public Schools in Clarendon County, South Carolina. He was a member of Cypress Fork A.M.E. Church.

Wally was the last of 9 siblings. Preceding him in death: his Parents, Hattie and Wally Pendergrass, Sr. His Brothers: Bobby Pendergrass and Cleveland Pendergrass of South Carolina; James Pendergrass (Ruth), Matthew Pendergrass and Joe Louis Pendergrass, of Baltimore. His Sisters: Elsie Mae Pendergrass DuRant (Reuben) of South Carolina; Cora Lee Pendergrass Eady (Harry) and Jessie Mae Pendergrass Keels (Benjamin), of Baltimore. Two very dear and special friends, Franklin and Erma Wright of Baltimore.

Wally really enjoyed living in South Carolina. He decided to move to Baltimore, MD, in 1961. He began his employment at Salad King, where he worked until 1966. Wally then found the career of a lifetime, working for ARA Services, and worked there for the next 35 years. While at ARA, Wally received numerous awards for his many achievements. Wally loved his job, met many great people and remained a loyal employee until his retirement in 2001. After retirement, Wally enjoyed relaxing, telling jokes, fishing, watching his many western shows and being a loyal fan of the Baltimore Orioles and the Ravens. Wally was a die-hard Orioles fan, even when they were losing. He still watched EVERY game! You usually saw him wearing his Orioles or Ravens hats.

After Wally moved to Baltimore, he met the Love of his Life, Evelyn Dickey. They courted for 7 months and were married on November 20, 1965. Their union would go on to stand the test of time for 55 years! They demonstrated all of the joys of being married and sticking together through thick and thin. From this union, 3 wonderful children were born: Warren, Sharon and Wayne Pendergrass. Wally and Evelyn created a beautiful family bond over the years. They enjoyed family trips with the children, to Hershey Park, Fort Smallwood Beach, trips back home to South Carolina and visits to loving relatives. They just enjoyed life together. Wally and Evelyn were even more overjoyed, when their granddaughter, Taysia Shayla Pendergrass, was born on December 29, 2005. She just added another spark of Love to the family.

Wally joined Gospel Tabernacle Baptist Church, under Bishop Reginald L. Kennedy, on his first visit in 2003. He loved worshipping at GTBC. Wally joined The Men of the Tab Choir, shortly after joining GTBC. He loved to sing, and continued to sing with the Choir until his health began to fail him. He loved the Lord and one of his favorite songs was " I Don't Feel No Ways Tired". His favorite Scripture was Matthew 2: 1-21. Wally really enjoyed being a member of Gospel Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Wally was a generous, kind-hearted and loving man. He always brought a smile to your face with his jokes and laughter. His gentle spirit will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

Wally leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife of 55 years, Evelyn Pendergrass; two sons, Warren and Wayne Pendergrass; one daughter, Sharon Pendergrass; Andre Lipscomb, who was like a son to him; one granddaughter, Taysia Pendergrass; 3 grandchildren-in love: Taniya Sanders, Reginald Little and James Jenkins and Andre Lipscomb, who was like a son to him. One Brother-in-Law: Leo Dickey (Carolyn), of Baltimore; Sisters-in-Law: Mary Pendergrass of South Carolina; Ella Ree Pendergrass, Mary A. Fullard and Alice Dickey of Baltimore; a close co-worker and friend, Edward Garris, a close friend, Mack Eaddy, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
