Wanda Elaine Gibson Yarberough
was born, the daughter of Altomease E.
Gibson Gordon and James T. Gibson on October 10, 1952 in Baltimore,
Maryland. She was one of four children, sisters, Angela D. Gibson Hughes
(deceased- January 20, 2002), Cheryl A Gibson Bell and one brother,
James I. Gibson (deceased- November 23, 1976). Stepfather, Cornelius L.
Gordon, Sr., preceded her in death.
Wanda attended Baltimore City Public Schools, graduating from Eastern
High School in 1970. She made the family proud as she participated in the
Me-De-So's Debutante Cotillion of 1971. Wanda continued her education
by attending Morgan State University. She majored in Elementary
Education and graduated with her Bachelor's Degree in 1974.
Wanda immediately began teaching at Charles Carroll of Carrolton #139
Elementary School in Baltimore City. While there she received the
Standard Professional Certificate of Teaching. Once she became
accustomed to teaching in the classroom and grading papers, Wanda
began to relax and take some time to herself. She met and married
Rudolph Yarberough and later divorced.
Continuing to grow and use her planning, organizing and teaching skills,
she left the classroom and the school system and entered the federal
government, working for the United States Postal Service. While there,
Wanda served in various positions. Utilizing her teaching skills, she
worked in Human Resources' Postal Employee Development Center
(PEDC) for many years. This department trained and tested employees to
qualify for various positions of employment. When her health began to fail,
she was forced to retire on disability. She received her Order of Eastern
Star Degree and served as the Financial Secretary in Electa Chapter #1,
O.E.S., MGC of MWPHGL of Maryland until October 31, 2015, having to
resign because of her health.
