Obituary

On December 5, 1926 Wilbert Thomas Osbourne made his entrance into this world. He was born to Etheline and Walter Osbourne in the parish of St. Michael, on the island of Barbados, West Indies. He received has early education at Wesley Hall Boys School and Richmond's Boys school. After leaving school he apprenticed himself to his father and learned cabinet making. This trade would serve him well throughout his life. He took great pride in his work which was demonstrated by the painstaking efforts he put into the items which he made or repaired. Some of the furniture which he made can still be found at his home in Barbados. On June 26, 1952, he joined his hand in marriage with Sylvia Agatha Lloyd. Theirs was a happy marriage. To this union was born John, Cyril and Terrence. Sylvia was the glue of the family, he the bread winner. These two opposites complimented each other. She, the outgoing, accommodating one and he, the retiring and reserved one. She made their home a happy place while he ensured that their needs were met. Together they taught their sons to love God and do the right things. When Sylvia died on July 4, 1984, after thirty two years of marriage, his life was never the same again. Her death taught him how to live. He learned and appreciated why he did things the way he did them. He made new friends and treasured old ones. His point of view on many things changed. But the void in his life created by her death was never filled. In the early 1950's he entered the Public Service of Barbados as a Public Health Inspector. A career which would take him all over the island making sure that the public's health was not endangered. He had some wonderful as well as terrifying and dangerous experiences. In 1978 he had the opportunity to continue his education in Public Health as he traveled to Jamaica to complete a diploma course at the University of the West Indies at Mona. This was one of the accomplishments of which he was very proud. He fell in love with Jamaica and its people, and often reflected on the time spent there. In November 1986, he retired as a Senior Public Health Inspector after more than thirty five years of service. He was the elder brother to Bruce. They had a close relationship, although they lived in different countries. Later in life, they kept in contact and would visit each other whenever they got the opportunity. Bruce would often call to check up on him and offer suggestions for his care in Wilbert's later years. Sadly, Bruce predeceased him on March 19, this year. This too affected him deeply. His hobbies included photography, swimming and repairing furniture. He spent many hours engaging in these activities. Two of his passions were music and playing the piano. He filled his home with most types of music, from classical to religious to easy listening. He would spend hours listening to music. Often late at night he could be heard hammering away at the piano. He brought his love for music to the house of God as one of the pianist and organist of King Street Seventh Day-Adventist church. Wilbert was a faithful member of King Street Seventh-Day Adventist church for most of his life. He served as church organist, Church Clerk, Sabbath School teacher and auditor. In the 1970's his Sabbath School class won favorite among the young people who eagerly looked forward to class time as he made it interesting and appealing to them. He made the lessons relevant to their lives. Wilbert's faith was anchored in the Lord. He sought out and proved the Lord. He spent his early morning and evening in devotion. He would spend hours studying the Bible and Ellen G. White's writing. He testified of the goodness of God. He reflected his Christ like character in the way he conducted his business and dealt with people. He was a highly principled man, who dealt fairly with all men. This was a reflection of his belief in God. He lived with the blessed hope that one day he will see God. As years took its toll on his health and he could not care for himself as he should, his sons brought him to Baltimore, Maryland to care for him. They made his final years carefree and comfortable. On July 15, 2013, Wilbert departed this life peacefully and now sleeps awaiting Christ's return. -Those who cherish his memory are sons, John, Cyril, Terrence; Daughters-in-law: Joyce, Nioca and Diana; Grand-children: Jamal, Jamil, Leia, Leon, Leslie, Leron, Tiana and Theodore.
