IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William H.
Cook, Jr.
October 12, 1927 – October 20, 2018
WILLIAM HENRY COOK, JR.
was born on October 12, 1927, in Baltimore,
Maryland, to William H. Cook, Sr. and Viola B. Gross Cook. He died on
October 20, 2018 after a long illness.
William, affectionately known to all as "Junior Cook", was educated in the
Baltimore City Public School System. He attended and graduated from
Harvey Johnson Junior High School, in South Baltimore. However, he had
to sit out his first year in high school, because he was stricken with a spinal
disease which required that he be quarantined in the home for that year.
The following year, after having completely recovered, he found that his
friends were, naturally, one year ahead of him. Thus, not wanting to be in
a grade behind,he dropped out of school. However, he was not deterred
from pursuing his education; he enrolled in Night School and continued
until he received hisHigh School Diploma.
In
1945, at age 18, Junior enlisted into the United States Army Air Corps
and served in the Korean Conflict. He was Honorably Discharged in 1948.
While in the military, Junior became a prize-winning boxer, a sport which
he continued in his civilian life.
Upon returning to Baltimore, Junior worked at
Hub
Stores as a truck
driver, at Western Auto as a mechanic, and for the last twenty years of his
employment life, at FMC Corporation as a laborer.
Junior was a dashing, handsome, outgoing and friendly man, who loved
everybody and who everybody loved in return. He was fiercely protective
of his sisters, Audrey and Doris, of his younger brother, Donald, as well as
of the family members and friends who he held dear. He was known to
challenge (physically and verbally) anyone who dared to even think
about mistreating any of the people he loved. And, he was a proud,
boastful and supportive father, who loved his many children, grandchildren,
and surrogate children providing them with guidance and unconditional love.
Left to cherish his memory are his twelve children: CaSandra Pettaway (Lester);
Francine Hargrove (Clifton); Deborah Jenkins (Dwayne); Sterling Walker
(Francina);William Cook (Lenore); Michael Cook; Wayne Cook (Alvania);
Steven Cook (Germaine); Cynthia Cook; Tonya Green; Terry Alston; Wanda
Denise Thomas; and his grandchildren, great grand- children, nieces, nephews;
other relatives and a host of friends. He will be greatly missed.
Junior was predeceased in death by his parents, William H. Cook, Sr. & Viola B.
Cook, his siblings, Vernon Cook, Donald Cook, Audrey Cook Ferguson, Doris
Cook Jeffries Sye, and Thelma Cook, three of his children, Brian Cook, Kevin
Cook and Kim Cook-Chase, and his granddaughter, April Ware (Deborah's daughter).
