Obituary

Dr. William Melvin Grant, son of the late William G. Grant, Jr. and Mary Belle Woods, was born on March 14, 1948 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He departed his life on January 19,2017 at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, Chicago, Illinois.

He graduated from G.W. Carver High School in 1966. He furthered his education at Livingstone College and gradu- ated with a degree in Chemistry. He also graduated from University of North Carolina School of Medicine with his residency in Anesthesiology. Dr. Grant performed a post doctoral fellowship at Bowman Green in Wake Forest, NC. He was a clinical anesthesiologist at E.H. Crump Memorial Hospital and Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center in Memphis, TN, and St Elizabeth Hospital in Chicago, IL until his retirement. He also taught and mentored medical and nursing students and Emergency Medical Technicians in Chicago.

He was a member at St Stephen AME Church in Chicago, IL under the leadership of Pastor James C. Bailey.

He was affectionately known as Melvin to some and Carlos to others. He had a love for cars and cooking. He won numerous awards for his exotic cars and mouth watering BBQ recipes.

Melvin leaves to cherish his memory: his children, David of St Louis, MO, Alex of San Francisco, CA, andAnnie of Bloomington, IL; sisters, Ruby Allen (Carlos) and Angela McQueen (John) of Baltimore, MD;brothers, James Grant of Rocky Mount, NC and Billy Taylor (Dorothy) of Red Oak, NC; stepsister,Gwendolyn Brown and stepbrothers Boise Williams and Vernon Lee Taylor of North Caroli- na; aunts, LucilleQuinn of Virginia and Dorothy Wil- liams and Jenny Walker of Baltimore, MD; special niece, Janelle; nephews, Terrance, Timothy, Taron and Tory of Baltimore, MD and Derrick of Converse, TX ; and other relatives and friends.
