Obituary

Kathleen Coles, affectionately known as Kathy, was born on January 29, 1949 and departed this life on April 10, 2021. Kathy was the sixth of thirteen children born to the late William and Gladys Harris. She married the late Kenneth W. Coles, and from this union, had two children, Chris W. Coles and Kendra Y. Coles Hart, who she adored tremendously.

After graduating from Douglass High School, Kathy worked for over 25 years at Commercial Credit Company in Downtown Baltimore until their closure. Afterwards, she worked for PRIME Counseling Services for 10 years, where she found great pleasure in supporting people in need. In recent years, Kathy proudly became a Certified Tourism Ambassador. From there after, she became a self-proclaimed expert, saying she knew everything about Downtown Baltimore. She used her knowledge to support patrons at the Baltimore Convention Center and those who came to Maryland for local and national professional conferences.

Kathy loved her eight grandchildren. She would radiate with love and admiration as she gushed over how proud she was of each one of them. Kathy was an amazing cook with non-traditional techniques. She did not use recipes, measuring utensils, or modern day appliances, yet everything she cooked was delicious. According to Kathy, you just "needed to eye it." Kathy was a true leader in her family and was viewed as a confidante and many counted on her for support. She facilitated holiday and family gatherings, with one of her favorites being an annual Family Reunion. Kathy was no nonsense and direct, but had a great sense of humor and compassion for others. Wherever she was, there were always outbursts of laughter. Kathy had many siblings who were blessed with singing talent, however, during family events Kathy loved to give a solo rendition of her favorite song Ghee Wiz, which only Kathy and her mother could appreciate.

Kathy was a longtime member of John Wesley United Methodist Church. She loved God, her church, and her church family. She served faithfully in many capacities including Communion Steward, Pastor/Staff Parish Relation Committee, and Armor Bearer Ministry. She supported the Rev. Dr. Alfreda Wiggins Saturday Academy and was the registrar for Vacation Bible School for 16 years. She assisted in the church office whenever needed. She helped organize countless holiday, community, and church events. Kathy served many years as a Girl Scout Leader where she took great pride in being a mentor to young girls in the church and local community. Often times, Kathy would facilitate the Girl Scout cookie drive and would order an abundance of cookies to support her scouts. In turn, her family would receive cookies for birthdays, holidays, and just because days.

Kathy will forever be loved and remembered by: son Chris W. Coles, daughter Kendra Y. Coles Hart; eight grandchildren Kristin A. Coles (J'nai), Gerard R. Hart Jr. (Genevieve), Christian J. Coles, Kendall W. Coles, Kedric W. Hart, Korryn K. Hart, Korrey W. Hart, and Loren E. Coles; son-in-law Gerard R. Hart Sr.; daughter-in-law Wynona A. C. Coles; brothers Wayne Harris (Saundra), John Harris, Michael Harris, and Tyrone Harris; sisters Penelope Sykes, Margaret Harris, Shirley Harris, and Carolyn Taylor (Wallace); Special Aunt Josie Harris; lifetime friend Jacqueline Garrus; friends Patricia Gooden and Lavern Jones; her John Wesley Church family; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Kathy was proceeded in death by three brothers Stanley Harris, Ronald Harris, and Robert Harris and one sister Linda Harris.
